Graduate training in
marriage
and family therapy informs my work with individuals and families.
As all of us seek wellness (safety, comfort, peace, health), and growth (knowledge, spirituality, compassion), we all draw upon various skills, goals, experiences and beliefs that shape our behavior. In my work, I respect clients as individuals who are doing what they can to achieve wellness and growth, and who experience successes to greater or lesser degrees in the different phases and circumstances of their lives.
My efforts in counseling focus on what the client wants and how they can identify and apply their own strengths and resources in order to meet their personal goals.

issues.
I understand that we can benefit from help if we feel stuck, overwhelmed or not sure where to turn. I believe therapy can provide deep healing which allows for greater flexibility, ease, self knowledge and enjoyment of life. With 20+ years of experience, I have been successful in helping my clients through depression, substance abuse, anxiety, panic and grief and loss or just gaining more satisfaction with their lives. After almost 30 years in mental health, I'm still passionate about the work I do. With that said, I'm here to help with the problems that have brought you to therapy. Gathering information and developing our relationship, along with trust and creating a safe space to share are my strengths in helping others. I use various approaches to assist clients. Along with this, I enjoy educating about how we learn and form in an inter-generational family system and how we can transmit problems in that family system unconsciously. This can inform and empower growth and change.

***Teletherapy sessions only at this time.*** Everyone needs someone to talk to, whether it's a family member, friend, spiritual leader, or someone else with whom you feel connected. If you've ever felt better after getting something off your chest, then you know what I mean. Therapy is often a place where we are free to share and explore the issues that challenge most of us at one time or another: relationships (romantic, family, etc.), stress, life transitions, parenting, anxiety, and more. My approach is one that respects where you are in your process, building the therapeutic relationship to help you move forward.

Change is an intrinsic part of life. It is inevitable, often painful even when it is a change that we desire to make. At other times it is thrust upon us. Much of my focus is about navigating change and understanding the forces that have brought us to the point of change or the need to change. Symptoms of depression and anxiety or addiction, for example, are often signs to tell us that something needs to change in our lives. My practice is science based, non-judgemental, collaborative, and my style quickly puts my clients at ease.

Marriage Counseling Therapists
How does marriage counseling work?
Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.
How long does marriage counseling typically last?
Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.
Is marriage counseling effective?
Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.
Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?
Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
