When you’ve experienced painful life events or struggle with mental health challenges, starting the healing process is not an easy task. In fact it is often easier to avoid it or numb the pain, to continue the same patterns and to repeat past experiences (the past experiences you always hoped you wouldn't repeat). Somehow we find ourselves in a life story and we wonder how we got there. We will never be able to re-write our stories until we can actually be present with the painful life experiences that have led us to where we are in life. Therapy gives us the space to start this process.

As all of us seek wellness (safety, comfort, peace, health), and growth (knowledge, spirituality, compassion), we all draw upon various skills, goals, experiences and beliefs that shape our behavior. In my work, I respect clients as individuals who are doing what they can to achieve wellness and growth, and who experience successes to greater or lesser degrees in the different phases and circumstances of their lives.
My efforts in counseling focus on what the client wants and how they can identify and apply their own strengths and resources in order to meet their personal goals.

After almost 30 years in mental health, I'm still passionate about the work I do. With that said, I'm here to help with the problems that have brought you to therapy. Gathering information and developing our relationship, along with trust and creating a safe space to share are my strengths in helping others. I use various approaches to assist clients. Along with this, I enjoy educating about how we learn and form in an inter-generational family system and how we can transmit problems in that family system unconsciously. This can inform and empower growth and change.

On our path in life we all go through times of struggle. Sometimes from unresolved past issues or just problems in the present. I believe we can learn to know ourselves and move through difficulties when we have support from a trusted individual with whom we can process. I work in collaboration with clients to build on natural strengths, while addressing barriers to progress, so they can move toward their goals. I work from a holistic perspective (mind/body) and create an emotionally supportive, non-judgmental space where clients can feel safe to share their stories and create insight for action and growth.

Is something in your life unmanageable, a pattern that you can see but have no idea how to stop or change? Chronic stress can drain your emotional well-being, leaving you vulnerable to anxiety, depression, unhealthy habits, and many other self-destructive or compulsive behaviors. You might feel trapped, like life is out of control and there is no hope. What if your brain is tricking you into thoughts, feelings and behaviors that are not helpful? I believe it's possible to figure out how to think and act differently, find hope and manage what only feels unmanageable.

Teen Therapists
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
