Life can be hard at times - for all of us. Sometimes, it is because of challenging circumstances such as the loss of a loved one, an illness/health issue, or a life transition. Other times, it's difficult to recognize the cause of the challenge. From the outside, your life may look wonderful, yet it may not feel that way on the inside. You don't need to push through on your own. I am here to help. It is crucial that you feel "gotten" by and connected to your therapist. I tailor my approach to the needs of my clients, as everyone is different and there is no "one size fits all" solution to life's challenges.

My specialty is pet- loss grief therapy.
For years I've helped women with their relationships, exploring the often unnoticed emotions and circumstances that can derail even the most fulfilled lives. Recently I've focused on our relationship with our pets. As a certified Pet Loss Grief Specialist, I find my clients are overwhelmed by the illness or death of their companion animals, and by the extent of their grief . Many clients are surprised by the depth of the bond they have or had with their pets. Often, friends and family don't understand or honor their pain, and it is my job to help them process their grief knowledgeably and in a safe and loving environment.

As a society, we are so scared to talk about death and dying, yet it is one of the very things that connects us all and makes us human.
Ready to punch the next person who says “Everything happens for a reason” or “Time heals all wounds”? You know that none of us make it to adulthood without experiencing loss . Everyone is grieving something. But it doesn't stop the crushing weight in your chest first thing in the morning. It also feels like snapping at your kids when you don’t mean to, being extra clumsy, exhausted, numb, or nursing a pervasive brain fog. The grief comes in waves; battering you, crashing into you, knocking you breathless to your knees. You may not see how yet but you will get through this, and I’m here as your guide and support along the way.

The adults who come for individual therapy generally describe varying degrees of anxiety or depression, and are dealing with emotional stressors including relationship or job difficulties, unemployment, chronic illness or grief .
I have been a psychotherapist in Westport for the past 25 years seeing adults, couples, children and adolescents and families. In all cases, I think generally in terms of family dynamics. Welcoming and nonjudgemental fundamentally define my attitude. The adolescents I see often come with social or home complaints, or obsessed with online activities, eating disorders, or other self injurious behaviors. My work with them frequently focuses on identity issues, including explorations of relationship choices and career direction, gender and/or sexual orientation questions, and divorce or blended family dilemmas.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
