As Clinical Director, The Essential Path
Family
Institute offers a premier addiction and relationship recovery program in Hartford County, Connecticut.
Each of us experience stress, anxiety, depression, and grief throughout life, and the need for love, safety, respect, and nurturing. The question isn't whether you can eliminate these feelings and needs; rather the question to ask is; "How do I take responsibility for fully understanding myself?" I declare that everyone is being called to discover themselves in the deepest sense. "What is your spirit communicating to you?" "What do you need to live a healthy life?" As you ponder these questions, I believe that your pain is what pushes you and your vision is what pulls you through life.

Thank you for visiting my profile.. How do you know that the unknown person you are reaching will be able to be attuned to you in the ways that you need? It's hard to discern this just from reading someone's profile. Most of my clients feel they know me before they reach out because they are referred by current or former clients. I like that but what about individuals who don't have the benefit of that pre-service information? I usually suggest potential clients schedule a FREE meeting for this reason. I hope you will consider doing exactly that.

My 30+ year career in psychology began with a specialty in the behavior problems of children and adolescents. Although this continues as a specialty, my practice has evolved to include adult, marital, and
family
issues. I place a strong emphasis on enhancing
family
harmony and cohesiveness through "common sense" parenting and developing sound marital relationships. I am aware that certain adult mental health issues may negatively impact
family
functioning. In some instances those adult issues need to be addressed first. I attempt to include the school and other agencies in the treatment plan when indicated.

We all have the power to heal. Within each of us are emotional parts that guide our choices, lifestyle, and overall way of being. These parts are created through our experiences, generational burdens, or through childhood trauma. In our work together, I will guide you in looking inward, seeking to identify your unique parts, how they came to be, and eventually learn to embrace them. It is through this inward journey, that you begin to feel love, kindness, and whole. In my work as a Marriage and
Family Therapist
, my approach is unique to each client.

Family Therapy
What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
