I believe that therapy can be effective in helping those that suffer from addiction. I have worked in in detox, outpatient and residential treatment. It is essential in treating people affected by this malady to understand the nature of the problem involved in treating this condition. Addiction does not exist in a vacuum. Recognizing and treating other problems, trauma, anxiety and depression, and the relationship between those problems and addiction, is necessary for successful treatment. I am extensively trained in trauma therapies, including Accelerated Resolution Therapy and
Dialectical
Behavior Therapy.

I also use cognitive behavioral,
dialectical
behavioral, skills-based, and solution-focused approaches to assist clients in defining and making progress toward their goals.
In facing life’s challenges, I believe in the importance of asking ourselves, “What’s right with me?” and identifying and building on our strengths. I enjoy accompanying people in exploring themselves with non-judgmental curiosity as they develop greater awareness of their thoughts, feelings, and ways of dealing with whatever life has in store. How have these been influenced by personal experiences growing up and by larger social factors? Gaining this insight allows us to discover what changes might be right for us or to come to accept ourselves just as we are.

At one point or another, we as humans are sure to encounter some sort of struggle within our lifetime and I understand how difficult it can be to ask for help. The benefits of reaching out for additional support can far outweigh the risk you take from figuring it out, all on your own. Together, we can create a safe, nonjudgmental, and healthy working relationship that will allow for you to gain the courage to actively engage in the therapeutic process. From there, you will begin to identify unhelpful thought patterns and related behaviors, while learning effective coping skills to be used outside of our time spent together.

Above all, therapy is a relationship. I work collaboratively with my clients to develop a safe, trusting, and attuned relationship that we can use to explore problematic patterns of relating, work through emotional tensions and conflicts, and better understand themselves. Through the therapeutic relationship, we can begin to unravel those patterns that keep people wondering, "why does this keep happening?", fully experience emotions, develop a greater sense of self-awareness and vitality, and understand how the past impacts and influences the present. Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists
Who is DBT for?
DBT is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.
Why do people need DBT?
The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.
What happens in DBT?
Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.
How long does DBT last?
Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
