Starting therapy is a brave step — one that often begins with discomfort, questions, or a desire for change. As poet Robert Frost once said, “The best way out is always through.” We won’t avoid pain or rush past the difficult parts of your story. Instead, we’ll walk through them — together. Therapy offers a place to slow down, reflect, and work through what’s weighing on you, with compassion and honesty.

There are many struggles in life that bring people to therapy. I specialize in helping people who have received a cancer diagnosis and are trying to navigate treatment, or figure out their life post cancer. A cancer diagnosis can have a significant emotional impact, often leading to a complex mix of feelings including fear, anger, sadness, grief, and a sense of being out of control. Sometimes people don’t feel comfortable sharing these intense emotions with family and/or friends and can end up feeling overwhelmed, stressed and lonely.

Hi, I’m Sam! I’m a licensed clinical social worker who believes therapy should feel like a place where you can show up authentically without needing to filter yourself or pretend everything’s okay because—let’s be real—sometimes things just don’t feel okay. I strive to create an environment that is safe, validating, and helps you feel truly seen and heard. Whether you’re looking to better understand yourself, navigate life changes, or simply have someone listen without judgment, I’m here to assist you in any way that allows you to move from where you are now to where you want to be.

You may feel stuck repeating the same patterns—frustrated by how you react to stress, relationships, or life transitions. Perhaps you’re a parent trying to understand your child’s emotions, or an adult navigating change that’s left you uncertain, anxious, or disconnected. You want to feel calmer, more confident, and more in control of your reactions. My clients are thoughtful, caring people who give a lot to others but often struggle to extend that same compassion to themselves. Together, we slow things down, make sense of what’s happening beneath the surface, and begin the process of rediscovering clarity, balance, and peace.

Each person is unique and therapy should be tailored to suit the individual seeking assistance. I work in a way to help each person determine the goal of therapy and we work together to achieve it. Although we all face challenges, everyone has strengths. I believe in tapping into these strengths and positive experiences to move past these obstacles in order to help the client achieve his/her best self.

I have availability in person on Monday evenings in Trumbull, CT.
Welcome to Olive Tree Counseling, where healing takes root. Erica specializes in supporting individuals navigating the profound impact of betrayal in trusted relationships. Betrayal trauma is a unique and deeply painful experience. It occurs when someone we trust implicitly shatters that trust, fundamentally disrupting our sense of safety and well-being. Unlike other forms of trauma, the pain of betrayal is unique because it originates from a relationship where care and protection were expected. This violation can devastate a person's sense of self, security, and their ability to function in the world around them.

FAQ - About In Person Therapy
What are the benefits of in-person therapy?
In-person therapy offers several benefits that some people find highly valuable for their mental health treatment. Being present in the same room as your therapist can create a stronger sense of connection and allow for more nuanced communication through body language. Some people may also find it easier to focus in therapy when they are in a dedicated space and away from potential distractions related to home or work; attending an in-person session provides a clear boundary between therapy time and the rest of your life. For certain therapeutic approaches, such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), exposure therapy, or somatic therapy, being in person may be particularly important, as these therapies benefit from the therapist being able to observe and respond to a client’s physical cues effectively. Additionally, some individuals simply feel more comfortable discussing sensitive or painful topics when they are face-to-face with their therapist rather than on a screen.

When should I choose in-person therapy over online therapy?
In-person therapy may be a better choice when you need a structured therapeutic environment separate from your daily life, when you find it difficult to focus or feel comfortable in an online setting, or when privacy at home is a concern. It may also be more appropriate if you are dealing with severe mental health symptoms that require close monitoring or if your therapy involves approaches that rely heavily on observing physical cues. On the other hand, if convenience, scheduling flexibility, or access to specialists outside your immediate area are priorities, online therapy may be a better fit. Many therapists offer both options, so you can also discuss with a provider which format might work best for your specific situation.

How do I find an in-person therapist?
You can use Psychology Today's therapist directory to find an in-person therapist in your area. You can search by location, insurance accepted, specialty areas, therapeutic approaches, and other criteria to narrow down providers who meet your needs. Each therapist profile includes information about their credentials, areas of expertise, and whether they offer in-person sessions. Once you have identified potential therapists, you can contact them directly through the directory to schedule an initial consultation and determine whether they are a good fit before committing to ongoing treatment. When reaching out, it can be helpful to confirm their availability for in-person appointments, their office location, and whether they accept your insurance.
