My goal is to help people improve their quality of life and to feel safe during the process. I have over 25 years of experience working with adolescents and adults, providing individual and group therapy, as well as crisis intervention. The majority of my work has been with people who have experienced loss and grief, trauma, and/or other significant issues such as depression, anxiety , PTSD, addictions, and ADHD. I utilize evidence based treatment approaches such as EMDR, CBT, and DBT, and believe that therapy should be person centered. I tailor to individual needs and goals rather than using a one treatment fits all approach.

I'm Pam (she/they), a queer, provisionally licensed LMSW at Well Being Sanctuary. I work with teens and young adults (12+) navigating anxiety, life transitions, and relationships- particularly LGBTQ+ youth who need a therapist who actually understands their experience, not just tolerates it. Before becoming a therapist, I worked in the field of education. I know how young people communicate and what it takes to build real trust with someone who did not ask to be in your office. I also train jiu jitsu- which tells you something about how I think about hard things. You do not avoid discomfort. You learn to move through it.

I also find deep fulfillment in helping clients navigate relationship challenges, strengthen communication, understand their emotional needs, and build healthier, more authentic connections. In my work, I frequently support individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, and emotional overwhelm.

I am trained in psychodynamic therapy and may incorporate elements of IFS, CBT, narrative therapy, MI, mindfulness, and somatic techniques in our work together.
I’m Sam Mashaw, a clinical social worker committed to helping you cultivate the self-confidence and self-compassion to step into your wholeness. We live in a society that often seems designed to keep us small, keep us scared, and keep us doubting ourselves. I consider how social context–historical, present, personal, and systemic–may be influencing the stories you have about yourself, your relationships, and the possibilities for your life. The truth is this: the world needs YOU, your unique gifts, and perspective. Whatever you’re going through, I am here to help you tap into your innate strengths and wisdom to navigate your life.

Among the frameworks that I draw from are Existential Philosophy, Social Learning Theory, Psychodynamic Theory and Object Relations Theory.

I draw from the interpersonal and psychodynamic perspectives in my work.
I work with everyone. Many arrive stretched thin: by systems that don't listen, families that aren't holding them, or a body and mind that no longer feel like home. You're welcome regardless of income, gender, orientation, politics, or faith. I draw on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and interpersonal process work to help you build flexibility, repair relational patterns, and move toward a life that fits you. I specialize in working with people moving through pregnancy, postpartum, the transition into parenthood, and people carrying trauma, complex PTSD, and/or attachment wounds that surface in current relationships.

Psychodynamic Therapists
Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.
How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.
Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.
What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
