Hi, I’m Shawniel Chamanlal, Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I work with adults who have spent much of their lives being the strong ones, responsible, capable, and often carrying more than their share. You may be someone others rely on, who shows up and gets things done, yet rarely has the space to slow down, rest, or be fully supported. Over time, this way of living can take a toll. Stress, self-doubt, emotional exhaustion, difficulty setting boundaries, or a lingering sense of not feeling “enough” often stem from earlier experiences in which you learned to adapt, push through, or put others before yourself.

Do you need help managing daily life stress in ways that let you stay productive even when it all seems overwhelming? Are you or someone you love struggling to manage pain, anxiety, depression, illness, or other issues that prevent you from fully living? Are you struggling to feel "good enough" or questioning your sense of purpose? Are you overwhelmed with the demands that life transitions bring? Life transitions, unexpected events and our own self-judgements can be emotionally taxing and destabilizing, but also can be opportunities for growth. If you recognize you need support, I believe I can help you find a healthy way forward.

My approach integrates expressive arts, spirituality, and somatic awareness to help you reconnect with your whole self.
You’ve done the talking. You've done the inner work—therapy, self-help, reflection. You’ve analyzed and tried to make sense of it all, but something still feels stuck. Maybe you’ve hit a wall in talk therapy or feel like your appointments are venting sessions. Are you craving a more transformative, embodied, and creative way forward? Are you ready to move from insight to integration? From knowing to truly feeling? Are you seeking a deeper, embodied kind of healing—one that lives in your body, breath, and soul? Art therapy can open that door.

Struggling in a relationship? Feeling stuck in patterns of people-pleasing, perfectionism, or self-doubt? You’re not alone — and healing is possible! Many MJA clients experience difficulties with attachment, find it hard to set boundaries, or feel like they’re not "good enough." They may identify as people-pleasers, rigid thinkers, seek constant approval, or carry the weight of unresolved trauma. If your thoughts, emotions, or behaviors are getting in the way of living a fulfilling life, together we can uncover the roots of these patterns, in a safe and supportive environment, via in-office or convenient telehealth appointments.

I integrate EMDR, CBT, somatic techniques, and attachment-based approaches to support deeper, lasting change beyond short-term relief.
I work with adolescents and adults experiencing anxiety, depression, PTSD, or feeling stuck in patterns they don’t fully understand. You might notice overthinking, emotional ups and downs, difficulty feeling settled in yourself, or repeating the same dynamics in relationships. Even when things look “fine” on the outside, something within you may not feel right. In therapy, we move beyond just managing symptoms. Together, we’ll look at the patterns driving your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. We will explore how they developed, how they’ve helped you cope, how they may be keeping you stuck, and begin working toward lasting change.

It’s my joy to help individuals and couples during the many stages of family planning and parenting through a combination of talk therapy and somatic practices.
Parenthood has changed you in a way that no one prepared you for despite all the books, podcasts, and advice you got. Maybe you find difficulty in even recognizing yourself as your identity shifts. Together we can slow down so you can have space to catch your breath and reconnect with yourself again. In session we can help rebuild your sense of self, as well as find compassion for yourself so you can go from just surviving every day, to feeling confident and capable.

My approach is shaped by my own healing journey and years of experience, including training at The Meadows with experts like Pia Melody (Developmental Immaturity Model), Claudia Black (It Will Never Happen to Me), and Peter Levine ( Somatic Experiencing).
You are realizing that it is time to focus on healing. Life hasn’t been easy for you. You've faced a number of challenges that haven't been healed. Or, perhaps, you’re facing a loss that has left you disoriented and raw. Survival mode feels like a daily routine, and you don’t even know what “normal” feels like anymore. You may struggle with anxiety, depression, or intrusive thoughts and images. You find yourself swinging between overwhelm and detachment, anger and numbness. Only those who’ve been in your shoes can truly understand. You know it’s time to seek help toward healing and enjoying more of what life has to offer!

I offer a range of treatment modalities such as creative arts therapy, somatic processing and talk therapy with focus on self-compassion, mindfulness, spirituality, mind-body connection and creativity.
Art therapy may differ from what we associate with traditional arts based practices since it can be utilized as a tool to further explore unconscious thoughts and emotions, it isn't necessary to have a background in art making, just the desire to explore your psyche. In our work together we will learn from the process of creating and from the artwork itself.

Somatic Therapists
How does somatic therapy work?
Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.

Is EMDR a somatic therapy?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.

Is somatic therapy evidence-based?
Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.

What is somatic trauma therapy?
Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
