If you are someone who feels stuck in old patterns and you are ready to take an honest look at yourself and do the work to change, I am eager to work with you. My clients are often carrying a lot internally. I provide a space where they can be real, be supported and challenged in a grounded, compassionate way without feeling judged or “fixed.” My clients and I work together to find clarity, a stronger sense of self, and freedom from the things that weigh them down, so they can finally move forward with purpose.

I have over 20 years experience helping those with substance / alcohol use as well as those with Justice-Involved issues such as court-ordered treatment and evaluations.
Ready to try something different? I'm not like other therapists. I am a follower of No Bullshit Therapy (NBT) (YES, that is a real therapy!), which was developed to engage people who are cynical, suspicious, or unsure of what to expect from counseling and therefore reluctant to seek counseling. Looking to connect in a world filled with stress, relationship issues, anxiety and worry? If you are in a place in your life where you are ready to make some needed changes, want to reduce your alcohol or substance use or just stop, I can help you become a better version of who you are.

My primary area of expertise is in working with individuals with alcohol and substance use disorders, including treating the different co-occurring disorders that are often at the root of addiction. I have extensive experience in detox, inpatient, and outpatient treatment facilities. Directly prior to starting my private practice, I worked for four years as a clinician at High Watch Recovery Center in Kent, CT, where my own journey in recovery began in May of 2009.

My Center for Progressive Treatment is best for substance-involved individuals and their loved ones who have not reached their goals with traditional treatment, especially those who are not inclined toward 12-step (AA or NA) approaches. We believe that you, the client, 1) know what treatment will work for you (you pick from a wide array of scientifically-proven treatments vs. the traditional idea that others should decide for you); 2) already have the power to change (vs. it comes from admitting powerlessness); and 3) are your own best source of motivation (vs. it comes from external pressure or a higher power).

Typically, the usual approach to addiction begins with the premise that something is broken, and needs to be fixed. You will often be given a list of things to do,and a time frame to do it in. I believe that my job is to help you reflect on why you behave and think the way that you do, and coach you to begin the process of making the changes you need to make in your life in order to heal. Change begins with you. It is important to become more solution-focused, and not distracted by worry and anxiety.

When an individual is abusing substances, often times it manifests itself as chaos, unpredictability, and complete confusion. As a result, not only is the individual tormented, but the suffering extends to their family and loved ones. When this happens, confusion, anger, fear, and other uncomfortable emotions frequently arise in all parties involved, as a solution to this overwhelming problem seems unfathomable. To compound this issue, the substance abuse treatment industry can be incredibly difficult to navigate. Having worked in a wide variety of substance abuse treatment settings, I can help with this process.

I've been practicing as a psychotherapist for over 30 years. I have been clinical director of mental health facilities and on the faculty of Tufts University School of Medicine. I welcome clients 14 years of age and older -- individuals and couples, and offer you a warm personal approach focusing on your specific needs. I don't believe in a "one size fits all" model of practice or that therapy should be "a way of life." Therapy begins with a careful assessment and plan. If what we are doing isn't working for you, we change it.

Do you find yourself drinking more and more due to stress at work or issues in your relationships? You think you have it under control but know deep down, it may be time to talk to someone and are feeling embarrassed. I understand that asking for help can be hard and believe that by reflecting on what's currently contributing to your drinking will help motivate you to make changes. You want to feel better and drink less and I can help support you in cutting back and getting back into doing things you once enjoyed.

Alcohol Use Therapists
Are there specific medications for alcohol use?
There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
