Navigating the challenges and complexities of everyday life can be painful. Anxiety, depression and stress—often stemming from relationship or financial difficulties—can leave us feeling alone, overwhelmed and uncertain about how to move forward. Having a safe, supportive space to explore options and discover what works best for you can make a significant difference in overall well-being and quality of life. In my work, I take a strengths-based, postmodern approach, fostering a compassionate and nonjudgmental therapeutic relationship that encourages growth through the thoughtful integration of diverse therapeutic methods.

As the spouse of a first responder, a former mobile crisis clinician, and direct experience in a municipal police department, I recognize the unique challenges associated with the demanding career. First responders, active military, and veterans often struggle to balance work related stressors while attempting to remain connected to those closest to them. I recognize the courage that it takes to make the first step in strengthening your mental health. Through EMDR or traditional talk therapy we can promote positive change while acknowledging the demands and sacrifices of the job.

Many clients reach out when they are feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or unsure how to manage what they are going through. This can include anxiety, emotional dysregulation, identity questions, or difficulty navigating life changes. I support clients in building tools to manage emotions, feel more grounded, and deepen their understanding of themselves. I use mindfulness, DBT, and ACT skills in my work, and I am currently training in EMDR. I am also attuned in Level 1 Reiki, which I may integrate as a grounding and mindfulness-based practice in session when it feels helpful.

Simple Intentions Counseling LLC looks for client's that are insightful, curious, and ready to explore the deeper layers of their emotional life. They may be struggling with anxiety, self-doubt, relationship patterns, or a persistent feeling of being “stuck.” They want clarity, self-acceptance, and tools to manage their emotions — but more than that, they want to understand why they feel the way they do. They’re not afraid to be challenged and are open to connecting their current struggles with earlier life experiences. They want lasting change, not quick fixes — and they’re ready to do the work.

During difficult times, we can feel overwhelmed and stuck, unable to break ineffective or even destructive cycles. Getting “unstuck” involves incorporating new skills and concepts, such as psychological flexibility, self-awareness, assertive communication skills, mindfulness, effective coping strategies, insight, decision making skills, and values clarity.

Self Esteem Therapists
When should a person seek therapy for low self-esteem?
When self-esteem problems begin to disrupt the healthy daily functioning of an individual, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not engaging with friends for fear of being judged, not completing work assignments because they don’t think they’re capable, or not finding romantic love because they don’t feel they’re worthy of it, a therapist may be able to help.

What are the signs of low self-esteem?
Low self-esteem is a common issue that can affect a person's mental and emotional well-being. Some common signs of low self-esteem include negative self-talk, perfectionism, social anxiety, difficulty making decisions, an inability to set boundaries, people-pleasing, and others. A lack of belief in oneself or one’s abilities and a feeling of not being worthy or deserving underlie most of these characteristics.

What causes low self-esteem?
Feelings of low self-worth can begin in childhood or adulthood. Being raised by a highly critical parent or growing up feeling constant disapproval can stay with a person well into adulthood. Specific issues in adulthood may also be a cause of low self-esteem. An unhappy relationship, a dysfunctional work or school experience can impact a person’s feelings of self-worth.

How can therapy improve self-esteem?
Therapists can help identify negative thought patterns that keep the client stuck in a loop of destructive self-talk and develop coping skills to change the voice in their head. A therapist can help with goal-setting, so that clients are better able to stay on task and build confidence from successfully completing work they’re proud of. Coaching a client on how to better communicate can improve relationships. These skills can result in someone with low self-esteem feeling empowered and living with less fear.
