The challenges of life’s situations, the loss of a loved one, underlying trauma, mental illness, substance misuse, intimate partner violence can bring on feelings of loneliness, sadness, fear, anger, desperation, hopelessness, and grief to name a few. These emotions can at times leave us feeling “not like ourselves,” overwhelmed, and out of control, thereby, interfering with our daily lives and our ability to enjoy life to the fullest. Take a moment to imagine your life without these problems.

Additionally, I have experience and passion working with survivors of domestic violence , navigating autism as an adult, health at every size, and perinatal mental health.
I'm Melanie, a licensed clinical social worker in CT and NY. I congratulate you for prioritizing the time to care for yourself. Seeking therapy can be an intimidating task, as we often have to open up, speak to and challenge parts of ourselves we've tucked away. Perhaps you have experienced a big life transition and are seeking helping navigating this next chapter. Perhaps you have noticed the same patterns emerging in your relationships or find yourself going to the same old, familiar place to keep your head above the water. These roads can feel isolating on your own, I would be honored to join you and work together.

Twenty-five years into it, I still love being a counselor and psychotherapist. It is an honor and a privilege to be involved in the personal struggle and transformation of each client, couple, and family I see. I regard therapy more as an art than a science, though I certainly utilize current research in my practice. Most often my clients present problems in living rather than "mental illness" per se and they appreciate my attention to their strengths, resources, and spiritual concerns.

Accepting new clients I know that making the decision to find a person to speak with is an extremely personal and intimate one. Once this decision is made then comes the search to find the "right" person and this may not be an easy task. I want to reassure you that I understand this and strive to create a relaxed and welcoming environment. I feel the development of a trusting and respectful relationship between client and therapist is vital to the therapeutic process and is a primary goal in treatment. We will talk about your goals and how to use them as motivation in therapy. Then create a plan together to achieve them.

You put on a brave face every morning for the people close to you, and sometimes it works, but you certainly aren’t fooling yourself. You can’t remember the last time you were really happy; sometimes it’s hard to even remember what happiness felt like. The little bumps in the road you used to handle with ease suddenly seem to loom over you like a torrential wave. But you aren’t alone. By making it here you’ve already taken your first step on the road to recovery.

Therapy can be a valuable tool with a good fit. My motto that I have coined is “ Uncover, Discover and Discard. In therapy, I’ll collaboratively work with you to Uncover aspects of your life that may be preventing you from being the best version of yourself. Then we will Discover how negative, toxic, and unhealthful thoughts and behaviors manifest in your life and seek to create new ways of coping and develop strategies to replace those unhelpful behaviors and limiting beliefs. Last, we will Discard any unnecessary belief and/or behaviors that isn’t adding value to your life. Allow me to assist you on your healing journey.

Domestic Abuse Therapists

What are the most effective ways to recover from domestic abuse?

Leaving an abusive relationship requires tremendous courage, so survivors in treatment should recognize that they have already completed the most important step. Still, the trauma of physical or emotional abuse can be difficult to process and overcome. Therapy can help survivors process trauma, grief, and difficult emotions, treat relevant mental health symptoms, and create a new framework for boundaries and relationships in the future. For some, support groups can also be an invaluable outlet for healing.

When should an individual seek help for domestic abuse?

Victims of intimate partner violence should seek help immediately. It can take substantial time, planning, energy, and courage to leave an abusive relationship, but starting the process—by seeking therapy, calling the domestic violence hotline, or simply confiding in a loved one—will help them get there. Those who have left abusive relationships but haven’t sought treatment can also greatly benefit from therapy to process and heal from the experience.

What are the consequences of staying in an abusive relationship?

Remaining in an abusive relationship has serious repercussions. In addition to the ongoing threat of physical danger and emotional abuse, research shows that intimate partner violence is associated with a range of mental health disorders including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and substance abuse. Therefore it’s important for individuals in an abusive relationship to seek help as soon as possible.

How can you get domestic abuse treatment for someone else?

It can be very complicated to identify and leave an abusive relationship; barriers include the threat of violence, financial instability, and family pressures. Those concerned about a loved one in an abusive relationship should talk to them about the situation, provide them with resources such as the domestic violence hotline, and introduce the idea of seeing a therapist due to their concern for the person’s safety and well-being.
