When I am not doing therapy I am spending time with family and friends.
Forming a family can be difficult business and new parents need a lot of support, validation, and education. You may be feeling hopeless, sad, angry, and anxious in a time in which you are "supposed" to be anything but. You may be feeling disconnected from your partner or like a stranger in your own skin. Postpartum mood disorders can look different among people - you might not be sure if you have one, but you know that this is not you. You are not alone! I am an allied licensed marriage and family therapist specializing in perinatal mental health in individuals.

"I was referred to Jody by a dear friend while struggling through a severe family crisis.
Hello, I am experienced in helping successfully cope with life's adjustments (including stress and anger management, relationship issues, addiction, grief, and caregiver issues). Life's changes can leave us challenged with feelings of uncertainty, frustration, hopelessness, isolation, and depression. I utilize an eclectic approach (mostly Mindful Cognitive Behavorial) as everyone is different and within the complex individual, moments and experiences are different as well. I strive to work with each individual, with compassion, patience, and dignity, with the goal that they can fully function and live their life to its fullest.

I have experience in trauma-focused, attachment based, and cognitive behavioral models, and my framework is largely influenced by Internal Family Systems.
I won’t give a long spiel about hope and joy here, but what I will say is that life is hard and therapy can be really helpful in managing the ways in which what we have been through impacts us.

What you might not even share with a friend of family member you can trust with me— when you're ready.
Life is hard and can be very challenging— and over time leave so many repetitive thoughts and emotions running through your mind, it can be hard to focus. Are you are looking for someone to listen with an un-biased ear and help you sort out your thoughts. Then I am your therapist. I understand the challenges of growing up, trying to fit in and how bullying can grate at one’s self-esteem and confidence. The pressures of living up to expectations and the anxiety that can provide. I can help rebuild that sense of confidence and self-esteem and believe everyone can reach their full potential with the right perspective on life.

Our trained therapists offer individual, couples and family sessions and start by exploring goals for working together and identifying what has and has not worked for you in the past.
Taking the first step to reach out to a therapist is no easy task and we want to help you recognize that you're doing something big by just looking at this profile to consider if we might be a good fit. Some areas that we are especially passionate about are supporting those with loved ones with addictions, parents of children with special needs and those going through life transitions such as relationship changes, career changes and blended families.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
