Regardless of whether you or your child have experienced a sudden death of a loved one, sexual abuse , domestic violence, community violence, know that you do not need to go through it alone.
Interpersonal relationships shape the way we see and interact with the world around us. Experiencing trauma can turn our lives upside down and take a toll on our relationships. While each individual has a unique reaction to their circumstance, many feel vulnerable and confused about what is safe, others may be overwhelmed by feelings of hopelessness, anger, or depression. Trauma impacts the person who endured the experience and those that they love. I provide a nurturing environment that fosters emotional wellness and healing. A place where young people and families can acquire the skills necessary for lasting change.

Therapy is about what works for you. I provide a compassionate, non-judgmental, and confidential space to explore and shift away from maladaptive thoughts and patterns. I work relationally with individuals to foster self satisfaction, further self understanding and appreciation, and restore the self. A comfortable patient and therapist relationship is key to successful and meaningful therapy. I view the client as the expert on his or her own experience. I aim to create a safe space in order to expand awareness of that experience, integrate aspects that may have been excluded from awareness, and integrate new experience and meanings.

Accepting new clients! Therapy is a journey of discovery, and never one size fits all. Michelle will walk with you on this journey, meeting you where you are, and assisting you where needed, to get you where you want to be. Talking will only take you so far, the real work begins when you walk out that door/ turn off that video and face the area of concern(s) in your life. Making changes is not easy and everyone has different views and goals. Her job is to help support the client as they align their lifestyle to their goal, and provide a safe place for one to examine one's self and understand one's circumstances.

In working with me, my hope is that you will feel cared for, seen and understood. My style is warm and empathetic, but I am also very direct and solution-focused. My initial career in the theatre, ignited my interest in what both motivates and challenges us as human beings. Personal loss of great magnitude inspired a new career path for me, helping others navigate change, life transitions, and move toward personal growth and satisfaction in their lives. I love when clients gain self-awareness, improve their interpersonal relationships, reduce or eliminate stress and anxiety, and identify and actualize their goals.

Life can be unpredictable and overwhelming. We aren't always able to control what happens around us, but we all have the power to control how we react and respond. We have agency to determine what we will and won't allow in order to establish boundaries, and hold ourselves to standards that feel good to us. Therapy serves as a supportive and uplifting environment as you take your power back and discover healthier tools to reach your goals. We work together to overcome and grow through the things that life makes us go through.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
