Parent coaching and consultation fits well with telehealth.
10/10/22: Telehealth clients only. Morning availability. I am a board-certified art therapist and licensed professional counselor with 15 years of clinical experience. I specialize in early childhood mental health but work with all ages. I trust in the wisdom of clients' abilities to explore their own themes, symbols, and stories. Because we all develop our senses of self and safety within the context of early relationships, family/relationship-based work is essential. My art/play therapy practice is trauma and Polyvagal Theory-informed. My approach is flexible, solution-focused, and non-judgmental.

I also enjoy supporting adult clients, especially during the perinatal period (family planning through the first 2 years of parenting ).
Ideally, childhood is a time of wonder, play and learning in the context of safe relationships. Sometimes, despite the best intentions of caregivers, children experience trauma or other situations that challenge their sense of safety. Other times, a child’s behaviors make it clear that they are struggling, but it’s not clear why. Developing resilience and a healthy attachment style are profoundly impactful throughout life. My practice focuses on supporting the emotional & mental health needs of children under age 10, as well as adults seeking to resolve their own childhood traumas, manage family stress or bond with their baby/child.

"You are doing the very best you can!" We enter adulthood with a lifetime of experiences-both positive and negative. Is today feeling like a replay of past trauma, relationships struggling, parenting making you feel like a failure, while the voice in your head says, "I am not enough?" My practice is based on the beliefs, “it is never too late” and “we each have infinite worth.” The quality of our early relationship with our caregivers, repeats without our awareness. Our past need not define our present. You are worthy of finding comfort within a secure, therapeutic relationship. Together we can explore and discover healing.

I specialize in family issues; from assisting a parent in learning new skills for a child with difficult behaviors, helping a couple to gain clearer communication and understanding, or with a college student navigating their new found independence, and what that means for parents who are becoming empty nesters.
Sometimes in life we experience situations that can be overwhelming, and we begin to struggle with maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Other times we or our family members may experience more chronic difficulties that impact our functioning. Therapy is available to assist you in finding balance in your life through learning appropriate ways of coping and learning new skills, increasing motivation and letting go of pain. I am a warm and compassionate person here to hear you, and to provide guidance to you, using a positive outlook, sense of calm, and humor when appropriate.

Some of the issues addressed in treatment may include depression, anxiety, trauma, substance use, work stress, self-harm, or limited parenting skills.
Many individuals who may benefit from therapy are feeling emotionally distressed. This could be the result of problems within their relationships, job, academic setting, or due to general life stressors. Yet, many of these individuals are also reluctant to seek treatment due to the various misconceptions about therapy. This is of particular importance to my treatment approach, as I strive to meet each client's distinct needs with the understanding that this endeavor may not have been an easy one.

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
