Most people come to therapy because they feel overwhelming feelings (like depression, anxiety, or anger), or they find themselves behaving in ways (like damaging relationships, or avoiding things they should be facing) that are hard to change. My approach is primarily cognitive-behavioral (CBT), which means that I try to help people discover patterns of thinking that produce emotions or behaviors that don't work for them, and then learn to think and act differently. It's important for you to feel listened to and understood, but you can also expect my style to be fairly "active," and for our goals to be as clear as possible.

Limited morning and early afternoon availability only. Sometimes our thoughts inhibit our ability to enjoy life and live in the present. How we react to those thoughts is so important, yet for many of us, we rely on strategies that are ineffective at best and harmful at worst. Often, we get stuck in a cyclical pattern of thinking, and we can feel our anxiety growing. There is a way out of this.

Our mission at the Athlete's Resource is to support athletes in the challenges they face throughout their career. For athletes recovering from sport injury, we collaborate with outside providers (i.e., physical therapists, athletic trainers, etc.) to support and guide athletes through emotional and behavioral aspects of their recovery. We teach athletes skills to increase motivation, concentration, and confidence to optimize their mindset for play. For athletes transitioning out of sport we provide education on what athletes can expect, coping strategies, and a space to process the losses associated with this transition.

Accepting new clients! Therapy is a journey of discovery, and never one size fits all. Michelle will walk with you on this journey, meeting you where you are, and assisting you where needed, to get you where you want to be. Talking will only take you so far, the real work begins when you walk out that door/ turn off that video and face the area of concern(s) in your life. Making changes is not easy and everyone has different views and goals. Her job is to help support the client as they align their lifestyle to their goal, and provide a safe place for one to examine one's self and understand one's circumstances.

Sometimes it gets really hard to share our problems because we feel no one else can relate. My goal is to create a safe and structured environment where clients can speak freely and create a plan to help overcome their issues. Some of these issues may include anxiety, depression, grief, anger management, divorce, substance abuse, etc. They can affect daily life and require further assistance by a licensed professional to navigate challenges.

Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Therapists

How does acceptance and commitment therapy work?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages a person to listen to their self-talk. A person’s inner dialog can be indicative of how they treat themselves. ACT also encourages self-compassion; this can lead to a better understanding of negative thought patterns and emotional states. This understanding can then lead the individual to needed behavior change.

What are the goals of acceptance and commitment therapy?

The goal of acceptance and commitment is to expand a person’s psychological flexibility, a trait that encourages an individual to live in the present moment and to accept all their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, even ones that are difficult such as sadness and anxiety. In ACT, this acceptance is congruent with the individual’s values and beliefs.

Does acceptance and commitment therapy work for depression?

Acceptance and commitment therapy is effective for depression because it allows the individual to view their discomfort and suffering differently. Depressive feelings about relationship heartaches, for example, are a part of life. A despondent person learns to let go of their struggles and instead view their painful thoughts and feelings with compassion. This will lead the individual toward positive change.

How long are people typically in acceptance and commitment therapy?

A typical acceptance and commitment therapy session is 50 minutes long with one session per week. Treatment for common problems such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties can last between eight weeks to four months. However, more severe cases may require more than one session a week and/or a longer time frame for treatment.
