We can help you deal with life transitions, stressful situations, relationships, school and work stress, sadness, self esteem, anxiety, health issues, and other challenges. I typically treat PTSD, anxiety, in all it's complexities, and depression, often coupled with pain developed alongside illness.
I feel that it is important to connect with clients on a deep and meaningful level. The therapeutic relationship is the most important indicator of success and meaningful change in a client's life. It is essential for both the therapist and the client to be engaged in the therapeutic process, actively setting your personal and relationship goals and collaborating on the best ways to meet these.

I aim to help people struggling with most types of emotional disorders (especially anxiety problems), and also have a specialty in health psychology issues: coping with chronic pain or illness, and treating insomnia.
Most people come to therapy because they feel overwhelming feelings (like depression, anxiety, or anger), or they find themselves behaving in ways (like damaging relationships, or avoiding things they should be facing) that are hard to change. My approach is primarily cognitive-behavioral (CBT), which means that I try to help people discover patterns of thinking that produce emotions or behaviors that don't work for them, and then learn to think and act differently. It's important for you to feel listened to and understood, but you can also expect my style to be fairly "active," and for our goals to be as clear as possible.

I have been working with people struggling with chronic illness/ pain, stress&anxiety for a decade as a health&life coach, and later on as a therapist.
Most of my clients will say I offer immense compassion but will also challenge you to look deeply at the stuff you may be (consciously/or unconsciously) turning away from. My approach is “holistic” which is often a loaded word in today’s world. For me, I look at each person as a make up of the physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual.

It is especially effective for conditions that have an emotional base or aspect, such as Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, mood problems, depression, compulsions, food and environmental sensitivities, anger, and stress.
My practice is about solving problems, from relatively simple ones like smoking, weight control, or sleep issues, to deeper ones like fears and phobias, and, complex, chronic illnesses that almost invariably have multi-faceted emotional roots. Of course, chronic illnesses can rarely be dealt with as easily and quickly as, say, insomnia, smoking cessation, teeth grinding, or TMJ problems. Habits and simple fears and phobias mostly respond very well to the application of skilled Direct-Suggestion hypnosis. However, Healing Hypnosis, my specialty, is a more intensive and deeper process. That aims to get to the root of problems.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
