Hi, and thanks for visiting my profile! I use a cognitive behavioral therapy called acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), which includes mindfulness techniques and defining your values. Research shows that ACT is effective for a wide range of client issues. I treat anxiety (including OCD and panic disorder), depression, adjustment issues, difficulty with life transitions, marital issues, career/academic stress, and relationship problems. I also really enjoy assisting with parenting issues, women's issues, and postpartum adjustment. I have a background in child clinical psychology so feel well equipped to help with parenting.

My clinical practice draws from extensive training in psychotherapy that integrates a psychodynamic perspective with therapeutic interventions that match the unique needs of a client. The range of interpersonal and skill-based interventions includes an understanding of family, culture, and gender specific influences on the current issues or concerns. The use of mindfulness principles and skills provides an added support to clients for strengthening their ability to better manage stress and for overall well-being. In over two decades as a psychotherapist I have consistently found that an integrative approach is most effective for promoting the positive outcomes that my clients are seeking.

I specialize in trauma and adverse life events as well as mindfulness practices.
Our way of live has been turned upside down. The structures of our community that ground, secure and orient us, have been hit by this pandemic. We find ourselves feeling disoriented and out of sorts. Others are grappling with not only the upending of routines caused by the pandemic but are fearing for their life or their livelihood. Whatever your situation, your life has been changed right now by something outside your control, and this is invariably stressful. And, of course, many of you were dealing with mental health issues or traumatic life events before the complication of a pandemic.

Progress on that path has a lot to do with developing mindfulness skills–skills I’ve witnessed past clients grow–that result in knowing when we need to break our routines, slow down, and be present.
Life can often feel overwhelming–you’re carrying a lot on your shoulders–and as a result you feel stuck in a rut or routine. Please know that this narrative can change; it’s possible to find peace, and I’m here to help. Our therapeutic relationship is the most important aspect of therapy, and so my objective is always to provide a space where folks feel safe and heard and like they can be their authentic selves within a session. I use a warm, validating approach balanced with a directness that is clear and affirming. I’m person-centered and believe that my clients should be co-creators in their own paths to healing.

In addition to my training as a clinical social worker, I draw from decades of experience with yoga, Eastern philosophy, and Mindfulness .
I believe that each of us already possesses the ability to live a happy and fulfilling life. With greater self-understanding, we can discover and break through barriers that hold us back, find new perspectives, and achieve new goals. I work with people who are experiencing specific challenges--such as trauma or relationship issues--as well as those who suffer from anxiety, depression, feel "stuck in a rut" or are simply interested in exploring new ways to find more fulfillment in their lives. Whatever your goal, we can work together to achieve balance and lasting change.

My unique approach draws on psychodynamic psychotherapy, mindfulness , and somatic therapy.
Psychotherapy is a collaboration between therapist and client. It makes use of the strengths, resources and goals of the client and the supportive attunement, non-judgmental perspective, training and experience of the therapist. Many of my clients come to me because they want to incorporate mindfulness and somatic therapies with talk therapy in order to work more effectively with anxiety, depression, pain and other challenges in which the body is implicated.

I believe that we all need support, however at times we may need a different type of support than what those close to us can and/or are able to provide. Reaching out and asking for help takes a significant amount of strength and courage, something I not only recognize, but respect in all aspects of my practice. Whether you are going through a difficult life experience or are dealing with something that is more long-standing and chronic, I am committed to working with you to reach your personal goals.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
