My expertise is in life transitions, substance use, mental health (wide range), relationships, conflict resolution, and crisis; ranging in ages from pre-teenage years through late adulthood.
Not all big problems began big, and not all small problems remain small. There are many different reasons clients come to me for help, with the common goal of finding happiness, and living a life that feels fulfilled and peaceful. Whether it be an experience from the past that anchors you, a problem in the present that negatively affects important responsibilities such as family/relationships, career/education and overall well being, or worry of the future; everyone deserves to feel in control and empowered for their own lives. Together, we can convert negative thinking into positive/proactive thinking that generates change.

I help people dealing with stress, life changes, traumas, addiction, and anxiety to return to productive functioning in the family, school, and workplace.
Let's face it; sometimes...life is just hard! It's hard to feel like your back is up against a wall. It's hard to manage the difficult challenges of life alone. It's hard resorting to undesirable behaviors just to cope with the day to day. When life gets that hard, we need a safe, judgement free space to explore our options and cut through the surface to create and act upon what matters most to us in life.

I offer individual counseling with a specialty in substance use disorders, but work with all who want to feel better.
My practice focuses on mind/body medicine and restoring balance naturally. Have you ever gone to the doctor because you felt unwell, but were told everything is normal? Or given medication based on symptoms that didn't make you feel better? In addition to clinical counseling, I work with clients to improve both physical and emotional wellness using evidence based approaches including acupuncture and nutritional guidance. Sound evidence supports how the gut (digestive system) impacts the brain and mood providing possible roots to unexplained symptoms.

It is my belief that mental illness and addiction can be treated successfully when a therapist and client have an active, open, and trusting, collaborative relationship. Sometimes an individual who is suffering needs to believe that there are solutions available for them and the chance to change. I have extensive training in working clinically with adolescents, young adults, and adults suffering from depression, anxiety, job burnout, addiction, or painful life transitions. I am a cognitive behavioral therapist and am extremely focused on helping my clients find solutions for their current problems.

I have spent several years working as an addiction counselor in the IOP clinic of a psychiatric hospital in Westchester Country, NY.
My clinical focus is PTSD, developmental trauma and addictive disorders. I combine traditional "talk" therapy with QEEG-informed Neurofeedback and EMDR, where appropriate. This offers you the best chance of healing past emotional wounds, alleviating symptoms, and living more fully in the present. The subtle, transformative power of Neurofeedback helps many clients resolve the traumatic stress, fear and anxiety that often underly behavioral and addictive disorders. EMDR is another powerful tool that can help resolve emotional trauma, improve functioning, and help you become more present-focused.

Our lives unfold their beauty, Like the petals of a flower, In challenges from circumstances, We find our finest hour. (C. Alexander Simkins). Generally it is in such circumstances that we find our way to a psychotherapist or a need for medication, not when life is smooth and comfortable. Many years of professional practice blended with my own life experiences have given me empathy and understanding that assist me in my relationships with my clients and in identifying with them what is needed to enhance healing and recovery. I am a nurse practitioner in psychiatry and mental health with a focus on depression, anxiety, life transitions, end of life issues, substance use and medication management. I see both individuals and couples. There are many research studies showing the use of hypnotherapy and mindfulness in easing the symptoms of stress and anxiety and I incorporate both into my practice. www.rickhanson.net. A wonderful resource to increase your knowledge and insights on how to use mindfulness to reduce stress.

In my view, therapy is all about developing a healthy relationship with the self, and therefore with others. It’s starts with having a healthy connection with your therapist. For over 20 years I have made it my mission to help people who struggle with the things that hold them back from living happy, valuable, and productive lives. In addition to the treatment of addiction & co-occurring mood disorders, my practice includes the particular challenges of the divorced single parent, as well as addressing individual dilemmas in the workplace. I am recognized for my understanding of treatment options & I gladly serve as a resource.

Are you experiencing: anxiety, malaise, feeling stuck, indecision, less connected, angry, or a sense something is missing? Are your intimate relationships satisfying? Is doubling down on “getting back to basics” or are you still wrestling with abstinence? We don’t fail or struggle from a lack of desire or willpower. We fail or struggle from a lack of support. You likely need more support than AA, or an IOP provides. I provide a personal, customized approach that can improve the effectiveness of your other efforts dramatically. Getting and staying sober is so much more than putting down the substance.

Addiction Therapists

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
