My background as a Marriage and Family Therapist has shaped the work I do to help individuals, couples, and families with issues such as anxiety, depression, communication, family conflict, child and adolescent development, parenting, substance abuse, addictions, co-dependency, grief and loss, trauma, anger, divorce, blended families, and infidelity.
Finding the right therapist is the first step in getting to the place you want to be. Whether for personal growth, a relationship or family issue, healing from loss or past trauma, the relationship developed with your therapist is an important part of this process. My approach to working with people is to provide a comfortable space to collaborate towards reaching your goals. Together we will lay the groundwork necessary to develop solutions to meet your needs.

As a marriage and family therapist, I am uniquely trained to identify, track and break patterns between couples & families in conflict. I work toward helping individuals, couples and families take an active role in creating the kind of change they desire. Marriages are not meant to merely SURVIVE, but rather to THRIVE. In couples counseling I help parties develop greater insight into their relationship and maintain a mindfulness toward its growth. Through focusing on action steps, I actively challenge individuals and couples to take accountability for their own thoughts and behavior as opposed to assessing their partner's.

"You are doing the very best you can!" We enter adulthood with a lifetime of experiences-both positive and negative. Is today feeling like a replay of past trauma, relationships struggling, parenting making you feel like a failure, while the voice in your head says, "I am not enough?" My practice is based on the beliefs, “it is never too late” and “we each have infinite worth.” The quality of our early relationship with our caregivers, repeats without our awareness. Our past need not define our present. You are worthy of finding comfort within a secure, therapeutic relationship. Together we can explore and discover healing.

I've been practicing as a psychotherapist for over 30 years. I have been clinical director of mental health facilities and on the faculty of Tufts University School of Medicine. I welcome clients 14 years of age and older -- individuals and couples, and offer you a warm personal approach focusing on your specific needs. I don't believe in a "one size fits all" model of practice or that therapy should be "a way of life." Therapy begins with a careful assessment and plan. If what we are doing isn't working for you, we change it.

I AM accepting new clients. I am incredibly proud of you for taking the step to find a therapist. Finding the “right fit,” is imperative and I’d like to share a bit about my style so you can decide what is best for you. I view therapy as a collaborative process between two humans. I always offer ample respect, dignity and compassion to everyone I encounter. I am a strengths based clinician, which means I will focus on positives when helping you identify and overcome difficulties in your life. Life happens in ways we often cannot control, but I believe it’s all about how we respond that counts most.

Are you ready to forgive yourself and others who have significantly impacted your life? Through learning to forgive you can deepen your awareness of what may prevent you from having more joy, love, and peace in your life. When you are not ready to forgive you can easily get stuck in a cycle of depression, anger, fear and anxiety. We all have innate wisdom and knowing that allows us to heal from any trauma or difficult life experience. Therapy is about coming to understand and know you have basic goodness as a human being. I will help you connect with that inner wisdom and knowing to create more meaning and purpose in your life.

Marriage Counseling Therapists

How does marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.

How long does marriage counseling typically last?

Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.

Is marriage counseling effective?

Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.

Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?

Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
