Not accepting new clients. Are you feeling stuck, anxious, or unable to stop thinking about the past? Trauma, whether from childhood experiences, abusive relationships, sexual violence, or difficult family dynamics, can have a lasting impact. When our nervous systems remain on high alert, it can show up as anxiety, depression, panic attacks, intrusive memories, low-self esteem, or feeling disconnected from yourself or others. Though trauma is my niche, I also specialize in working with adults and teenagers navigating depression, anxiety, general life stress, and parenting challenges.

I think every person is capable of living a joyful and meaningful life and sometimes things get stuck in our way of experiencing life how we would like. I think that’s a good place for therapy to enter the picture and I welcome the opportunity to assist you in your journey. My practice is trauma-informed and rooted in relational and attachment psychodynamic theory and critical liberation theory: I deeply value the clinical relationship in therapeutic work and am dedicated to working from a social justice perspective. I also deeply value humor; this work is hard, but it doesn’t mean we can’t find purpose and joy in the process.

Clients who have wounds, especially interpersonal ones, find that they feel heard without judgement when working with me. I don't get embarrassed or surprised and I think clients find I am warm, genuine, open-minded and respectful. My experience is heavily focused on trauma, especially interpersonal; anxiety; and parenting challenges. Talking with people in counseling is a gift people share with me and I am honored when I can be a part of someone's "story." With 20 years of clinical experience, I have had many opportunities to help people navigate changes in their lives. I believe in the importance of connectedness.

I have often likened trauma to a thief, and trauma therapy to a Robin-Hood like act of stealing back, a reclaiming of what should have never been taken. In my decade plus as a trauma therapist, I have been privileged to accompany my clients as a partner and sometimes guide in these acts of reclaiming, and have had the joy of witnessing the profound healing that can arise from courageous confrontations with the truth. My aim is to help clients to hold themselves with more self-compassion, to stop being caught in cycles of reliving past memories and adaptation patterns, and to shift out of survival mode into present moment aliveness.

All women are beautiful, in different and many ways. Yet, we often experience a sense of “never being enough”. As women, our lives are challenging and the things that influence a woman’s life can be oppressive and complex. I am here to be an ear, a sounding board and your advocate. I want to lift you up and show up in the ways you deserve. Together we will normalize and empower you through the harmful, unrealistic expectations that are often placed upon you. The world around you tries to define who you are, how you act, and what you look like. These are things that should only be defined by and written in your voice.

Sexual Abuse Therapists
How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
