Are you feeling stuck, anxious, or unable to stop thinking about the past? Trauma, whether from childhood experiences, abusive relationships, sexual violence, or difficult family dynamics, can have a lasting impact. When our nervous systems remain on high alert, it can show up as anxiety, depression, panic attacks, intrusive memories, low-self esteem, or feeling disconnected from yourself or others. Though trauma is my niche, I also specialize in working with adults and teenagers navigating depression, anxiety, general life stress, and parenting challenges.

I use multiple treatment modalities including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing ( EMDR) which is a treatment that facilitates healing from emotional distress from difficult life experiences, as well as solution focused and cognitive behavioral techniques.
At times in our lives we need additional support to navigate challenges and strengthen our internal capacity to cope. Together we will strive to understand your unique story and identify areas you want to work on in our meetings. Often this means increasing your awareness of patterns, understanding your own emotional responses, and strengthening coping skills.

If your past keeps intruding on your present, perhaps EMDR can help.
Anyone can feel lost, stuck, or overwhelmed. Maybe you seek freedom from the things interfering with your life, goals, and relationships. Perhaps you yearn to be more resilient, to adapt, and to grow. You have the power to change. If change feels like loss and meaning is hard to find, you don't have to go through it alone. I often work with creatives, therapists, college students, educators, LGBTQIA community members, people at turning points, and people wanting to stop engaging in "full disaster living." New times opening up in June. Now also licensed in Ohio.

Welcome and Thank you for visiting my Psychology Today profile! I’d like to share a little about myself so you can decide if you’d like to schedule a free 15 minute consult call. In 2011, three of my cousins were murdered. Their funeral was so big that it was held in a school gym and cafeteria; I realized in that moment how many lives these three humans had impacted. That funeral was the first time I saw my family from a larger systems perspective and knew that in order to create opportunities for healing and change that working as a Marriage and Family Therapist was what I wanted to do.

All of us deserve to savor what life has to offer to the fullest extent possible. Many of us experience that journey as compromised by obstacles that threaten to rob us of our joy. These blockages may come from events in the present, such as loss of a loved one or a deteriorating relationship; or they may result from earlier events that have left wounds/scars unhealed. I have been engaged in clinical work for 41 years, helping people navigate difficulties, heal trauma, restore their lives to wholeness. I invite you to let me walk that journey with you.... -- Barbara

Who is EMDR for?
EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.
Why do people need EMDR?
People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.
What problems does EMDR treat?
First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.
What happens in EMDR therapy?
First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimizing its ability to trigger anxiety.
