After working with people with substance use disorders over many years, I have learned that the power and promise of addiction recovery is available to anyone willing to embark on the journey. I firmly believe in each person’s ability to change and improve their life, especially when it comes to problematic substance use, and that there are many pathways of recovery and all are worthy of celebration!

Imagine you're dealing with trauma, anxiety or a difficult life situation, and when you come into therapy, the therapist makes you feel heard, respected, and understood. This environment helps you feel safe enough to talk about painful memories or emotions that you might not have felt comfortable sharing elsewhere. In that moment, the therapy session itself becomes a safe harbor—where you can unload, process, and begin to heal. I work from a person centered approach where I meet my clients where they are in their process of change. My areas of specialization include anxiety, depression, LGBTQ+, life transitions, trauma and PTSD.

Sometimes bad things happen to good people and they have difficulty moving past those experiences in their lives and those experiences continue to create issues in coping with life, relationships and functioning in their lives. If you have experienced a traumatic event(s) that continues to interfere with your life, you are not alone. Many people have difficulty moving past these traumas. I want you to know there is hope for you and most of all that you are not broken.

Congratulations on taking the first step towards a more balanced, purposeful and meaningful journey through life. In order to create change, we need insight, awareness and safety. Change rarely happens alone, and through our ability to connect from a place of non-judgement, we can work together to identify issues, examine solutions, create new avenues for growth and gain new skills needed to tackle life's challenges.

I have successfully worked with adults and children, couples and families, with both common and complex needs. My approach focuses on experiential awareness and processing, while working through present day thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is holistic in that it views symptoms as attempts at coping. We work together establishing a calm place within you, through the enhancement of personal awareness, resources, and developing coping strategies; we then progress beyond coping skills, moving through the roots of old learning so that your change is lasting, and from the inside out.

Typically, the usual approach to addiction begins with the premise that something is broken, and needs to be fixed. You will often be given a list of things to do,and a time frame to do it in. I believe that my job is to help you reflect on why you behave and think the way that you do, and coach you to begin the process of making the changes you need to make in your life in order to heal. Change begins with you. It is important to become more solution-focused, and not distracted by worry and anxiety.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
