Not accepting new clients
Not Accepting New Clients until Sept. 2024. I look forward to assisting you through the challenges of life and creating a happier and more empowered tomorrow. I often tell clients we all have 'junk in the trunk', it's often the junk we have not dealt with or avoid that sneaks up on us when we least expect it. It complicates this already complicated thing call 'life'. Let me help you unpack the junk, explore its impact on you and how its impact continues to effect you. Through supportive counseling you can take back the reigns and create positive change.

As a trauma therapist, I am here to support my clients with the empathy and compassion they deserve. I firmly believe each of us has a story different from the other, consisting of different experiences that have shaped the core beliefs of ourselves and the world we live in. We each have a right to share our stories, make meaning, and develop healthy strategies and habits to better function in our environments. With specialized training in trauma and experience utilizing several models of therapy, I take an integrative approach in treating a variety of psycho-social concerns in children, adolescents, adults, and families.

Twenty-five years into it, I still love being a counselor and psychotherapist. It is an honor and a privilege to be involved in the personal struggle and transformation of each client, couple, and family I see. I regard therapy more as an art than a science, though I certainly utilize current research in my practice. Most often my clients present problems in living rather than "mental illness" per se and they appreciate my attention to their strengths, resources, and spiritual concerns.

If you are struggling in life, chances are you have a diagnosis which is termed a psychiatric disorder- but diagnoses only define the negative aspects of who you are! In fact, most "disorders" have a wealth of amazingly positive traits also associated with them. Together, you and I will work to uncover your superpowers- those positive traits that diagnoses don't cover, and which make you amazing. Some of the therapies we incorporate into our practice include art therapy, Internal Family Systems, Authenticity Therapy, various styles of quick and effective trauma treatment, practical life skills, mindfulness (DBT) and CBT.

Much of my work has been with individuals who have experienced extreme stress or trauma in their lives. Today, so many of us have experienced events in our lives which we have not felt comfortable talking about and that pain has continued inside of us. I offer a place for individuals to explore these issues and to discover how these stressors affect and change the way our brains work as well as ways to re-train our brains and work. I provide outpatient, individualized, holistic care and offer a safe and comforting environment. My focus is to help individuals heal, energize, and help people become aware of their inner strengths.

I look forward to working with and helping people of all ages. Individuals and families can expect the use of Attachment Theory, reflective practice, mindfulness and humor. Many individuals are dealing with stressful situations with life's ever present changes. I offer assistance in goal setting and follow through. For young children and their families I use a Child-Parent Psychotherapeutic approach and can combine this with trauma work. Perinatal families can expect a deep understanding of the stages of becoming a parent and struggling.

"I have walked through many lives, some of them my own, and I am not who I was, though some principle of being abides, from which I struggle not to stray." These lines, from "The Layers", by Stanley Kunitz, hint at the themes we will explore if you decide to enter psychotherapy with me: Who have you been, and who are you now? What principle of being has shaped your life's journey thus far? Where and when did you disregard this principle? And how may I support you in your effort to recognize and honor your most authentic self?

Starting therapy is a challenging decision as we typically feel that we should manage things on our own. However, you realize that your symptoms are worsening. You may notice that it's interfering with your performance at school/work. You are having more difficulties getting out of bed and/or you may be overwhelmed by everything going on. You start realizing that now you are avoiding the things you used to do because it gives you temporary relief from your anxiety. I would like to help you explore the underlying causes and provide you with tools to enjoy what's important to you.

Hi! I’m Erica. Glad you are here and you have taken the first step towards self-discovery and healing. Finding the right therapist can be challenging, however it is so important to have a safe space for you to heal. Having supportive, compassionate and honest relationships is an essential part of life and wellbeing. The way one is raised, taught and treated are all underlying factors that contribute to their being as an adult, regardless of their ideas about those behaviors. My goal is to help decrease an individual’s suffering and free them from limitations that may be holding them back.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
