What is Art Therapy? This is the number one question asked of me. Briefly, as defined by the American Art Therapy Association (AATA), "Art therapy is a mental health profession in which clients, facilitated by the art therapist, use art media, the creative process, and the resulting artwork to explore their feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness, manage behavior and addictions, develop social skills, improve reality orientation, reduce anxiety, and increase self-esteem. A goal in art therapy is to improve or restore a client's functioning and his/her sense of personal well-being." The creative process lends itself readily to meeting the individual where they are at in the present moment. My personal style mirrors this. I utilize both the non-verbal and verbal processes to facilitate understanding, awareness and growth. My particular areas of expertise are grief/loss, attachment issues (i.e.foster care/adoption), trauma, mood instability, and disordered personality.
I am an experienced Creative Arts Therapist. I have been a practicing Art Therapist for 14 years and a practicing Sand Play Therapist for the last 4 years. I have a varied background in educational settings, inpatient and outpatient facilities, and foster care agencies. I have significant experience working with both individuals and groups. I have experience with children, adolescents and adults. A common misconception is that Art Therapy is just for children. This couldn't be further from the truth. It is widely used with clients of all ages.
While I am psychodynamically trained and oriented, I utilize this information to assist others to resolve issues that may be obstructing them in being their best authentic self, engaging dynamically in positive relationships with others, and/or contributing to the presenting issues that necessitate treatment. I am only a phone call or email away, if you'd like more information or to schedule an appointment. I look forward to hearing from you.
