Some people ask why I became a couples therapist, and my response is: "I was born a therapist." I enjoy the uniqueness of each client and their situation, how they have attempted to solve their problems, and how they are stuck. There are many situations that are similar among clients, but the interplay with each individual and their situation is infinite. Congruency for me is key. Being the person I ask others to be, holding each person with tenderness and creativity while we move toward their goals is transformative in the therapeutic process.

I work with individuals and couples using an integration of my EMDR, existential and holistic background.
Life is unpredictable with many ups and downs. No matter how much we want life to move in a linear fashion it often goes unplanned causing us to feel off balance. I believe therapy is a safe place to begin your own personal journey and learning to be present in your life. It allows you to rediscover who you are. Therapy is different for every individual and/or couple. I have an EMDR, existential & integrative approach to helping clients create healthy, fulfilling and rewarding lives. I integrate therapeutic styles depending on the best fit for client and situation.

Research has shown that the best predictor of success in counseling is the relationship between counselor and client.
Many individuals may see you as the person that has it all together, but on the inside you feel very different. The emotional disregulation you are experiencing is becoming to much. You are your own worst critic and feel defeated in life. Feeling lonely and isolated even when around others. No one knows or understands the perpetual anxiety and depression that continues during your daily living. Your loosing sleep because of the racing thoughts that just won't leave. Going through life constantly thinking that there is something wrong with you is leading to destructive and suicidal thoughts. Your at the point of giving up.

I provide therapy to individuals, couples, and families struggling with depression, anxiety, life transitions, relationship stress, and more. I work with children 6-12 years old, with a parent/primary care-giver. I am passionate about working with those navigating the mental load of motherhood, IVF/fertility issues, multicultural identity, and internalized oppression. I enjoy working systemically with families, to help gain a better understanding of how their "operating system" may contribute to the presenting issue and ways to shift it. I incorporate body awareness techniques with all my clients to improve the mind body connection.

I am dedicated to warmly empowering individuals and couples through non-judgmental listening, creative collaboration, and supporting access to inner wisdom.
Are you ready to embark on a path of relieving your individual and relational traumas, stresses, and conflicts? We all carry the burden of unresolved pain from our past: from our family of origin, from societal and cultural expectations, from ways in which we were taught to compromise our nature, the list goes on. With guidance, presence with feeling, and creating new meaning we can let go of the past so that we can open to the present.

In my clinical work,I try to partner with each patient to increase their self-knowledge and awareness and decrease their psychic pain.
Emotional pain can feel awkward and difficult to express. I know how hard it can be to make that first move and turn to someone for help with anxiety, depression, panic, trauma, self-loathing, or concerns about relationships with important people in your life. I use an insight-oriented approach to help my patients make meaning of their feelings and current behavior in light of both their chorus of internal voices and their actual psychological histories. When a patient becomes aware of 'the past operating in the present', a space begins to open up in their minds for making different choices.

I work closely with other sexual addiction professionals as we treat the entire system (acting out partner, affected partner and family).
At it's core, therapy is a process of healing and change. The decision to address an addiction, change your struggling marriage or address the other issues that hold you back is a difficult, but important step. I work with you to strengthen your relationships, create intimate connections, and sort through the baggage of life. My approach is positive, supportive and challenging when needed. In addition to addiction work, I also do "general practitioner" work like depression, anxiety, couple/marital therapy, and other mental health issues. My office is a safe and affirming space for all gender and sexual orientations.

Mary Anderson, PsyD is a licensed clinical psychologist. Her approach is psychodynamic, meaning the work will be to discover the patterns in your life that work well, as well as to recognize ones that cause distress. She also offers psychological testing for: intelligence, memory, ADHD, and trauma. Mary brings a compassionate and caring look at your situation, as well as an honest sounding-board, helping you to see what needs to be done to stop destructive patterns and move into a healthy place. Then we will work on who you choose to be, and how you want to relate with others.

I work well with adults, adolescents, families, and couples.
I have enormous respect for the power each individual has in creating positive change in their life and work hard with individuals and couples to accomplish this. Positive change often means learning new skills and strategies that will help you live more successfully and develop more enriching and meaningful relationships. Positive change also means doing something different rather than doing the same thing over and over again hoping you will get better results. Positive change takes place in the present as we face our fears, take responsibility for our thoughts, feelings and behaviors, and move towards what we value.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
