My greatest approach is building a genuine rapport to create a trusting relationship.
Hello and welcome! My name is Ivy Lam and my goal is to provide a welcoming and non-judgmental environment, so you can feel safe and validated when you are talking! One of the approaches I use is a strength-based approach. We all have our own strength, and sometimes when life gets hard it can be hard to see that we have the power within ourselves. I am here to help you see the greatness you have within yourself through many different evidence-based approaches such as strength-based, cognitive behavioral therapy, and dialectical behavioral therapy.

My passion is Christian and Catholic counseling and helping individuals, couples, and families with the stress life brings.
I have been a therapist since 2003 and if there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s that everyone needs someone to talk to. We all have feelings, whether we feel happy, excited, anxious, worried, nervous, sad or depressed—we need to get those feelings off our chest. Another thing I’ve learned over the years is keeping those feelings bottled up inside can and will make us sick. Why is something as simple as getting things off our chest so difficult to do? I believe it’s because of our pride and fear of judgment about our feelings. As a therapist, I truly strive to allow people to speak freely in a safe environment.

In the last ten years, I have been honored to provide therapy to individuals, couples, and families.
Welcome to the road to recovery! Recognizing the need to seek out assistance for your mental health and wellbeing is the first step of the journey. Life can become stressful and overwhelming at times and we often don't know where to turn. Confusion and uncertainty takes over and our sense of worth and value are shaken. The inability to cope with stress can lead to anxiety, depression, panic attacks, and other symptoms that can negatively impact your relationships. Experiencing childhood adversity or trauma at any age can also leave us on unstable ground

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
