I thrive with communication issues, LGBTQIA+ issues such as self-acceptance, interpersonal relationship troubles, and any issues that can be faced with a mindfulness approach.
My ideal client is neurodivergent on some level, perhaps they have sensory issues, communication issues, and relational issues. Their goals might be to find help making the world a more tolerable place for themselves and to increase their skills emotionally/verbally. This client is ready to get into it and is insightful.

Not only will you be heard, accepted, and respected, but you will experience a “real” relationship with different relational responses than those unhelpful responses you received from hurtful relationships.
Life can feel big, daunting, isolating and alone. I want to help undo that aloneness. Together we will explore those deeper feelings and thoughts that drive those struggles and then create new experiences that will strengthen you in the deepest parts of who you are.

I believe that therapy and the therapeutic relationship in particular can offer clients a new way to be in the world, a new way to see the world, and a new way to be with others.
Talking therapy has proven to be a powerful and effective treatment for a number of different mental health concerns. From my perspective, therapy is about building relationships and helping others to gain a better understanding of themselves and others.

I am completing my master’s degree in counseling psychology and work with adolescents, adults, and couples.
My imagination is captivated by how intricate and interconnected our stories are with the world around us, both in our intimate relationships and in the culture and society in which we live. Oftentimes these stories can weave patterns of disconnection between oneself and others, leaving us feeling stuck, and in need of care and tending. In my work, I offer a heartfelt and empathic space to explore your experience in the world. Whether it’s finding self-acceptance, moving through anxiety or depression, or navigating relationship challenges, I meet you where you’re at and help you find your inner resources for healing.

I am a psychologist practicing in Grand Rapids, MI who provides individual therapy, couples therapy, psychological assessment, and supervision.
People often seek therapy following life changes where customary ways of coping are no longer sufficient to meet the demands of their world. I consider the focus of my work as a therapist the development of a safe and trusting relationship where I can help a person discuss difficult feelings as well as identify problematic interpersonal patterns that may be getting in the way of personal goals and successful relationships. I then work closely and collaboratively with my client to develop creative and effective ways to move past these roadblocks.

Trauma is any event that overwhelms one's ability to cope. It can be a major/inherently violent event (car accident, rape, serious illness/major surgery, war/combat) or smaller more complex/chronic events (abuse/neglect, domestic violence, living in an unstable/unsafe environment, poverty, and even religion.) Often people don't realize they've been through something that was traumatic to them. Instead thinking the effects of the trauma (difficulty concentrating, mood swings, fail academically, can't keep a job, chronic pain, chronic relationship problems) are representative of who they are as a person, and feel helpless/hopeless.

Couples therapy, premarital counseling, and marital assessments have been my specialty for the past 26 years.
Sometimes, the reasons why partners become upset with each other run deeper than the present circumstances. When partners persist in doing or saying things that upset each other over and over again, there is often something more at stake than meets the eye. Stop feeling stuck in the same old problem cycle. I have over 30 years helping couples, individuals, and families find new solutions to old problems.
I have found my post-graduate training in marriage and family therapy to be a valuable resource in helping others achieve their goals and potential. I have also presented at national conferences.

Client diversity is my favorite part of being a therapist. I am open to working with anyone, no matter what issues, needs, and goals they bring to our relationship. My ideal client is simply motivated by a desire for change and has a strong commitment to the process of self-discovery. Navigating change requires a measure of courage, and some episodes of self-discovery may be uncomfortable. My ideal client will understand that each new challenge is simply a part of the overall discovery and growth process. Clients who strive to “face the fear and do it anyway” are usually a good fit with me.

I believe the therapeutic relationship provides a unique opportunity for clients to be able to process their experiences verbally with an unbiased individual who is able to help them explore, understand, and participate in the world around them.
Oftentimes, we experience barriers in achieving our desired future, and may or may not be able to identify or overcome them on our own. We will work together to unravel your questions, concerns, or frustrations so you are able to become a better version of yourself by obtaining clarity, closure, and/or modifying behavior. Life's challenges are real, and you don't have to face them on your own. I hope to help you understand yourself and your relationships more fully, so you are able to feel more free, authentic, and fulfilled.

Couples Counseling Therapists
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
