Do you struggle with living in a state of overwhelm that affects your work, home life, or relationships? Are you finding yourself strongly reacting to seemingly small things, and wondering, “what’s wrong with me?” Do you feel out of touch with yourself, outside of yourself, shutting down mentally & emotionally? Are you feeling lost, unheard, or betrayed in your relationship? If you can answer "yes" to any of these questions, then you have come to the right place, and there is hope for you. In the work we do together, you will be able to have more moments of contentment, assuredness, and power over your own wellness.

The transformational “magic” in therapy occurs when an alliance develops between therapist and client—when you feel truly seen, heard, and understood. I am here to listen deeply and journey alongside you as we discover ways to help you to get beyond patterns and behaviors that no longer serve you and move into a more hopeful, satisfying, and life-affirming future. Over the years, I've worked with couples, families, and individuals to address issues including but not limited to depression, anxiety, family conflict, grief/loss, trauma, school issues, sexual orientation, aging, infertility, pregnancy, and self-esteem.

I am now providing therapy via telehealth only. As a licensed clinical psychologist with over 25 years experience working with individuals/couples, I often see patients who struggle with unsatisfying family and personal relationships, health problems (e.g. infertility, cancer, chronic pain), grief and loss, and trouble with work and career. Change involves both insight and actual changes in one's behavior. My goal is to create a place where we can work safely to explore the origins of problems and rapidly create positive change in one's life. My approach is warm, supportive, and actively focused on bringing about lasting change.

For thirty years, I have trained in and practiced psychodynamic psychotherapy with individuals, couples, and groups.
The challenges, difficulties, or traumas we encounter in life can make us feel anxious, depressed, vulnerable, or even overwhelmed. Psychotherapy begins with finding someone you can trust, not only to lend a compassionate ear, but also where you can reflect and discuss openly your thoughts, feelings, and actions. I believe in working collaboratively, interactively, and respectfully to create a safe space. By exploring how your ways of coping may have developed and what they may serve, we can help you discover more varied ways of responding to life's struggles, enabling you to feel more hopeful and empowered.

When you enter therapy there is a sense of possibility. Finding a good match with a therapist is essential. Work on relationship is at the heart of therapy: relationship to oneself, to the past, to others, and to ultimate concerns and values.

I work with adults, adolescents, couples, and families to help folks live full and meaningful lives. If you choose to work with me, I will assume you’re coming with problems in your life or your relationships that you’d like to work on. I will hold steadfast to the idea that people are not problems, problems are problems. And while therapy might not be the exact solution to what ails you, it can help a good bit. And I want to help.

“I once heard a child who was afraid of the darkness call out: "Auntie, talk to me, I’m frightened.’ ‘But what good will that do? You can’t see me;’ to which the child replied: ‘If someone talks, it gets lighter.”(Sigmund Freud) I believe that through talk therapy, we can overcome whatever lies at the root of the problem. Together, we will try to better understand what has brought you to the consulting room, whether that be relationship problems, social anxiety, depression, trauma, self doubt or a specific issue you would like to address.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
