It's called “mentalizing.” Mentalizing is a genetic brain network used for making sense of what people say--It helps us understand the mental states of others and thus, know how they might respond to us. Genetic variations in this brain network can lead to great skill or mild to severe difficulties in communication effectiveness. A person can have average to superior intelligence and still have difficulty understanding the mental states of others. Connection with others may be difficult to establish or preserve.

I believe there are two basic principles in counseling/therapy: engage the client, and challenge the client. Whether it is individual or relational, we engage many opportunities to persevere and gain character. When those opportunities arise, the challenge put to our soul can be greatly disturbing. My philosophy assumes that a person's spirit, thoughts, emotions, and behaviors interconnect to form personal wholeness. Strict attention to the mind, without looking at the emotions or spirit, creates a split rather than holistic integration. Our minds are deeply influenced by our emotions and must realistically learn to live within this complex union.
