Starting or restarting therapy is a courageous step for individuals and for couples. Right now, you may feel stressed or overwhelmed with demands of family and work, a recent loss of a loved one, painful conflicts with people you care about, deep hurts from the past, or unfulfilled dreams of how it all was supposed to be. Amidst the emotional pain you may be feeling and the realization that things are not how you want them to be, there can be the realistic hope that with the help of a therapist who is a good fit, you can find relief from the present pain and a path towards a life filled with joy, connection, and significance.

I enjoy working with others struggling with anxiety, ADHD, depression, confidence, spirituality, relationship issues, and self-worth. I often find myself working with those who are learning how to honor their intuition and develop their true and higher selves. I also enjoy working with clients who are open to alternative therapies. I am a heart-centered and strengths-based therapist who meets clients where they are in life and strives to provide a nurturing environment to allow my clients to grow into the best versions of themselves.

It is difficult to imagine the ideal client. However, if I were to picture them, I would say they would be open and receptive towards therapy and have a desire to improve themselves. They would want to collaborate with their therapist to understand how stress, the environment, and personal history can impact their mental health. They would want a positive, empathetic relationship because it would encourage them to utilize the techniques they have learned and learn more effective ways to help themselves.

Whether you are looking for help with relationship issues or ways to manage anxiety, depression, or problems of everyday life, choosing a therapist is one of the most important decisions you can make. When clients feel secure, valued, and understood in the therapeutic relationship, exploration and resolution of difficult life experiences or painful emotions becomes possible. Tailoring psychotherapy to each client's unique needs is one aspect of creating a secure therapeutic bond. I work in a flexible manner, based on experience in diverse schools of therapy, including psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, and interpersonal.

I believe empathy and humor go a long way in creating a positive therapeutic relationship.
I believe in meeting clients where they are emotionally and mentally. Whether you're starting therapy for the first time, or have tried many times in the past, I want to meet you where you are and work with you to explore the next steps. Perhaps you or your child is struggling with the demands of school, work or relationships. Perhaps you and your partner feel stuck in your relationship and crave a better way to communicate with each other. Perhaps you're ready to dive in full force, or perhaps you're just questioning whether or not you want to make changes. These are just some of the issues that can be explored in therapy.

Goals to get a diagnosis for your disability & curious about medication, goals to reevaluate your relationship with cannabis/alcohol. In my 24 years as social worker at McLean Hospital and in private practice, I have worked with individuals, couples, and families who are dealing addiction to drugs and alcohol. I believe that one size does not fit all in the recovery process. I find traditional forms of recovery such as 12-step programs to be very helpful. I also utilize alternatives such as motivational enhancement therapy SMART recovery, which utilizes behavior modification techniques. I aid families in pursuing Al-Anon, where appropriate. I also facilitate interventions, both traditional and the CRAFT model, which utilizes a positive reinforcement approach.

I like to always start with establishing a trusting relationship with the client and creating a safe space for us to address their challenges.
It can be challenging and scary to seek counseling and to take the first steps toward desired change. Being aware of that, Latrese is grateful and eager about the opportunity to meet people where they are and to help them get to where they want to be.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
