I specialize in working with couples and non traditional relationships, relationship problems, the LGBTQ+ community, people going through life changes, stage of life adjustment, stress, and anxiety.
Relationships can be complicated, challenging, fulfilling, and rewarding all at once. My role is to help you navigate these relationships in a way that makes sense for you. I am a non-pathologizing therapist, meaning I believe people are not defined by the problem they are struggling with. For me it is an honor to be invited into someone’s life story and to be trusted to help create their desired change. I understand that people have varied experiences and come in with different goals/expectations. It is my job to meet someone where they are, and to work collaboratively at their pace.

It is important to find the right therapist, someone you can trust who understands you and your needs. Research has shown that a quality relationship, more than anything else, is what makes treatment effective in the long run and contributes to lasting change. You're here because you're experiencing life as challenging at this time. It may not always have been that way, but that seems to be the case now. Whether it is feelings of anxiety or depression, relational difficulties, parenting concerns or trauma resolution, you have taken the first courageous step toward giving to yourself.

Individual work, as well as working with couples, children and students, young adults, and parent/child relationships are my main areas of focus.
ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS, INTERNS/Counselors!! I appeal best with clients who have identified that some aspect of their life has stopped working for them, or never really worked at all. People who seek out a counselor to validate the fact that change is necessary, and desire professional help to collaborate in identifying their own natural strengths (or at least potential capabilities) towards overcoming difficulties just need a personal team player. These people are exciting to work with, from individuals to couples. My hope is that my warm and inviting office atmosphere and my own experience and skills can motivate mental healing .

Couples counseling is intimidating.
Are you feeling distant and disconnected in your marriage? Whether it's because of roommate syndrome, frequent fighting, a recent affair, or life changes, I want to help you find the best out of your relationship. You've likely been going round and round with your partner, having the same arguments, never really resolving things, and occasionally making some adjustments but with no lasting change. You just want to feel connected, supported, and loved again. I can help you.

Kia ora! I am JC. I work with couples, families, and individuals. I specialize in couples therapy because communication is key to an excellent relationship. Some of the most common reasons couples come to see me are: disagreements, relational trauma, family issues, and infidelity. The most important thing to me is a good connection between client and therapist. I work very hard to keep a warm, inviting, and non-judgmental atmosphere in my sessions. I go at your pace and work on the things you want to work on. I am here to help you!

I am passionate about working with clients that have suffered through childhood trauma and clients that are working through relationship issues.
I believe that each person experiences events in their own unique way, and that the way they perceive these events is driven by their own backgrounds. As such, everybody requires their own approach to the therapeutic process rather than a “cookie cutter” approach.

In my time working with DCFS, I have gained experience working with families that have been impacted by abuse or neglect, substance abuse, mental illness, and domestic violence. I have also worked with couples to reaffirm and strengthen relationships providing any necessary resources available to them. I believe in utilizing the bond between animals and human connection to heal their deepest traumas in the form of Equine Therapy. I also utilize my horses and animals as the self-care part of my life.

One of the most important aspects of counseling is your relationship with your counselor. I provide a safe space built upon empathy, understanding, and mutual respect. I work to provide a place where you can explore what is troubling you, and together we will work to achieve your therapeutic goals. Change comes from within. I work to empower my clients to make choices that fit within their value system by assisting them in learning what those are.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
