Suppose you returned home one night to your "empty" house on a corner to find the door smashed open, and sounds of someone inside and things falling on the floor. Afraid, you walk around the corner where your neighbor then tells you she saw smoke coming from your window and the firemen are inside finding the cause. Your attitude toward the intruders completely changes when you understand their purpose. I give clients similar insight about the problems hurting them and their relationships. It's tragic to suffer and to fear solvable problems because you don't understand them.

Please note that I work only with clients in California at this time. Often, when we connect with therapists, we present with clear issues we want to address. Other times, we could be struggling to interpret how a life event may be affecting us. When I work with a client, I like to know and understand that person deeply, including where they feel they are now in life, and how is it they got here, to this point. We will delve into moments in your earlier life that you believe may hold some importance, some current relevance, what I term the echo of our pasts. It is this exploration that makes therapy both enlightening and releasing.

I support clients in gaining insight and empowerment through the context of our relationship.
My work is grounded in compassion, curiosity, and connection. I come to clinical social work with a deeply held belief that all people are deserving of care and I have seen how a safe and collaborative therapeutic relationship can offer support when that care has been challenged. I know that part of healing means acknowledging and working beyond the systems that have caused harm and that this involves actively employing an anti-oppressive lens that refuses to pathologize trauma survival. I understand my clients are the experts on their experiences and I am committed to creating a practice that affirms people of all backgrounds.

As a therapist, I will help you take all of the stress and rearrange it into something beautiful for yourself, your relationship, or both.
Life gets messy and complicated. Struggling with the work/life/family balance can be managed by acknowledging the challenge and talking about it. Most clients struggle with some type of anxiety or depression. In the session, we start by working toward developing a coping skill "toolbox" and learning how to recognize when those symptoms start. Most clients want to feel heard and want to have strategies to use to help manage their symptoms. I also find that most clients want a person to listen, someone who is impartial, who can challenge but offer a perspective.

I specialize in relationship issues, anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, eating concerns, college/grad school/career concerns, and the impacts of oppression on our mental health.
We all deserve wholeness. Sometimes our relationships can hurt us, sometimes trauma harms us, and the very act of living in this world can cause pain and suffering. And sometimes we are trying the best we can to cope and survive. Reclaiming wholeness and healing is possible. As a licensed clinical psychologist, I have expertise in treating a wide range of mental health concerns and in supporting individuals, couples, and families. I approach therapy from a place that affirms and honors your whole self. I will empower you and hold space for you as you reclaim what has been taken, learn to listen to your own voice, and begin to heal.

I support individuals and couples experiencing depression, anxiety, relational issues, and identity struggles.
The way I engage with therapy values you as the expert of your story and I am honored to hold space for you. I incorporate person-centered, emotion-focused therapy along with attachment and feminist theories. This means that I believe people are innately built for connection with others and I hope to invite you with empathy, honesty, and compassion as we work together to connect you with your authentic self and support systems. I like to gently challenge and laugh with clients during sessions, and I believe therapy can be most transformative through collaboration and vulnerability.

You’re a busy person - and you like it that way. But you often find yourself taking on too much, and get upset when you can’t give everything 100%. You’re used to pleasing others, and you’re good at it! But sometimes it gets in the way of your own happiness and pleasure. You worry that expecting and asking what you want from others is selfish - or worse, that no one will listen to you. The demands of your job, children, partner, parents, school, and other commitments can weigh heavily on you when you feel like your desire has become an afterthought.

It has been an honor to serve and be invited into countless lives that span across cultures and intersections of identity. I remember the vulnerability, courage and boldness it took to begin my own therapeutic journey. I know that feeling bold, courageous, and empowered might be incongruent with what is felt when starting down this path. In fact, sad, tired, frustrated, or misunderstood might be more accurate. In either scenario, I intend to partner with you, and walk this path together. My training in marriage and family therapy has supported my understanding of individuals by seeing them from a systemic lens.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
