I use psychoeducation, mindfulness and self-compassion to address trauma, anxiety, depression, shame, feelings of stuckness, relationship strife and family-of-origin wounds.
I work with folks who want help understanding themselves, finding compassion and acceptance for themselves and figuring out more fulfilling ways to live. My clients often have trauma in their backgrounds and a big part of my work is giving them the tools and information they need to operate trauma-affected brains with less strife, more delight. I also work with folks around identity, sexuality and gender, helping them reject shame and grasp hold of the life they want to live authentically.

I believe that engaging in therapy is a radically courageous act. Exploring and sharing our stories can be terrifying, and doing so may go against the messages you internalized and survival strategies you adopted. Regardless of what brings you in, therapy can help you feel more fulfilled and more richly connected with yourself and others. I know that living in this time and culture can be confusing, painful, and isolating, and believe everyone deserves a space to make sense of it all, to be deeply seen and heard, and to be supported in cultivating a more meaningful and joyful life.

When I first became a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist 19 years ago, our understanding of how past traumas and attachment wounds affected us in the present, and how to effectively treat trauma and attachment wounds was very minimal. Since that time, extensive research, studies, theories and practices have broadened our knowledge of trauma's impact on the mind and body and expanded the variety of tools and resources available to support therapists. I can honestly say I have never loved my work as a trauma/attachment-focused therapist more than I do right now.

I work with people that want support processing their emotions, trauma and experiences so they can work towards healing and transforming their lives. My approach is compassionate and collaborative as I work to understand your lived experiences, trauma, identities, and what larger social and generational systems impact you. I believe that... “a person is a fluid process, not a fixed and static entity; a flowing river of change, not a block of solid material; a continually changing constellation of potentialities, not a fixed quantity of traits.” ― Carl R. Rogers

Do you worry constantly, have a persistent fear of failure or judgement and feel on edge with just about anything? Feeling like you’re not good enough, not living the life you want to live, or that you’ve lost touch with the things that bring you happiness? Have you had a traumatic experience that left you feeling disconnected and having a hard time trusting people, with the need to protect and numb yourself? These things can impact our physical and mental wellbeing, keep us up at night, make us feel disconnected from the people closest to us and reduce our ability to achieve what we want in life.

I am accepting new clients! In certain circumstances, seeking counsel from a professional becomes imperative. Although family and friends offer well-intentioned support, their reassurances such as 'don't worry about it' or 'everyone experiences this occasionally' may not suffice. What sets therapy apart is its unwavering focus on the individual. Personally, I adhere to a gradual approach, recognizing that the cornerstone of therapy lies in nurturing a strong therapeutic alliance between the therapist and the client. My practice extends to adolescents, families, couples, and individuals.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
