My private practice emphasizes making change through openness and trust, and building a personal plan that suits your unique life circumstance. There is no prescription for the length of therapy; some changes can occur with a few sessions and others may taken longer. Having realistic goals can help define when therapy is completed. A solution of the past can be the downfall of your present as well. I believe that in order to truly help someone; one must first seek to understand and then to be understood. Treat yourself as if you are someone worth being helped. To succeed in doing so, one must gain a deeper level of self-awareness through connecting the unconscious patterns of today, to the past traumatic events we have experienced. Understanding that the external world is a direct reflection of what is happening in the internal world, your perception can be a deciding factor to a new reality. Your life is what you choose it to be.

I hope to provide a safe, accepting, trusting and confidential atmosphere for those I work with so they can express themselves completely. Within this environment I would be honored to start a relationship with individuals that brings them to the next level they are striving for. Most emotional instability is caused from past trauma, loss and/or multi-systemic patterns/themes which continue to play out in our lives. I use a Family Systems Approach to psychotherapy combined with other interventions as needed. This approach permits individuals to grow from these experiences/patterns allowing their journey of self discovery to unfold.

Everyone functions uniquely, at times experiencing depression, anxiety, insecurities, doubt, and grief. I help people around these issues, as well as introversion, high-functioning Asperger's, bipolar, OCD, and social awkwardness...relationship issues, self-esteem, living with narcissists, identity. We can decide how to deal with life's changes, challenges, and transitions. We will focus compassionately on emotions, thoughts, behaviors, and relationships to examine patterns and slowly change them. Our ability to observe and use our will to change are the most powerful tools we possess to bring about changes we desire.

I enjoy working with individuals and will include their significant others, including spouse, partners, family members, friends and (yes) pets. As I see it, my job as a therapist is to work with you to create an environment in which you will feel emotionally safe, and one in which you can feel OK talking about all aspects of yourself. This allows us to use your personal strengths and resources to resolve your difficultes so you can become more like the person you want to be.

In private practice, I work with adolescents, adults, and couples experiencing mental health challenges and /or substance use disorders.
After 27 years as a high school teacher, I followed my long-held interest and returned to school to become a licensed social worker (LMSW) and a substance abuse counselor (CASAC.) I work with clients who are suffering from anxiety, depression, PTSD, trauma, substance abuse, ADHD/ADD and I also work with couples. I primarily use CBT, ACT and DBT. Data shows that most people who experience substance use disorders also meet the criteria for a mental health disorder such as depression, anxiety, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (70-80%), or some form of trauma (50%.) Treating substance abuse means treating the whole person.

My practice also includes individual and couples counseling, addiction, bereavement, and discussing issues of faith and philosophy (life's meaning).
2,500 years ago Socrates said, "The unexamined life is not worth living." He believed a good life requires an understanding of why we think, act, and feel as we do. Since relationship is part of psychotherapy, the personalities and philosophies of life of the client and therapist must be compatible. I am well-suited for clients who are curious about human behavior - their own as well as that of others. Before there were psychologists, the issues of life were addressed by philosophers. Thoroughly examining life includes considering ancient wisdom and spiritual reality as well as psychology (the science of mind and behavior).

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
