I'm a licensed clinical psychologist in practice on the Upper West Side for 20 years. I specialize in individual and couples therapy and work with adults of all ages. I work collaboratively and actively with my clients. The process of therapy includes recognizing patterns in ways of relating to others or in making choices that interfere with feeling satisfied and well. We will look at how those patterns developed as well as how to identify new choices and paths that don't contribute to impairment in mood, relationships, or work.

For over 25 years I have worked with adult and adolescent individuals, couples and families in an engaging and supportive way.
Therapy is about healing and self growth. It is about making decisions and achieving life goals. It is about bettering relationships and building meaningful ties. It's about working through, and living without the pain of loss, depression and anxiety. In an atmosphere of safety, trust and non-judgement, I will help you navigate those difficulties which foster anxiety, depression and confusion, recognizing the often, central role of trauma in such challenges. I will assist in the process of gaining insight, while making decisions which breed personal and professional success. I will help in cultivating and improving relationships.

Every individual’s motivation for seeking therapy is unique. I am sensitive to the specific goals that an individual has for the treatment, and frame recommendations accordingly. For some, therapy may involve a few, brief targeted consultations, while others may choose to engage in a longer term treatment. Regardless of the duration of treatment, I view the therapeutic relationship as providing the scaffolding to achieve one’s full potential, and resolve symptoms which often arise out of unresolved conflicts and anxieties.

I welcome individuals and couples seeking assistance for anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, obstacles to professional development, loss, grief, trauma, obsessive-compulsive disorder, bipolar spectrum, and coping with chronic illnesses.
Psychoanalysis has been a lifetime passion and dedication in my understanding of our journey in our lives. I believe psychoanalysis gives us space to think, understand, and be able to tolerate what seems to be unbearable, frustrating, and hopeless as well as relief from interpersonal difficulties or obstacles to achieving professional and personal goals. Creating a safe, trusted, and nonjudgmental atmosphere helps talk freely about thoughts, feelings, memories, hopes, and wishes. Gradually one acquires a deeper awareness and understanding of repeating patterns and develops new ways of thinking.

In addition to individual, group and couples counseling, I conduct workshops in the workplace.
I put you at ease, get to the heart of the matter and help you put things in perspective. If you are grieving I approach your problems with empathy and professional understanding. Problems in the workplace are invitable when you consider how much time many of us spend there. It's important that you recognize persistent patterns of conflict, it is the key to resolution.

Experiencing relationship distress, feeling stuck in unhealthy patterns with your partner, grappling with lingering past hurts, and struggling to define your identity are all challenging experiences that can greatly affect your well-being.
You're not exactly sure when it began, but each day, a strange emptiness takes over, making everything seem dull and lifeless. It feels like there's a vital piece missing that everyone else has. You experience a deep sense of loneliness and feel misunderstood by those around you. Your relationships have become an ongoing challenge, trapped in negative patterns that seem impossible to break. Communication with your partner is a mix of arguments and hurtful silent treatment. You've noticed yourself pulling away from friends because they don't seem to understand you. Despite your best efforts, you find yourself anxious and all alone.

I have experience working with adults and couples from many walks of life with many issues, including depression, anxiety and substance abuse as well as relationship and parenting issues.
Asking for help can be hard, but most of us could benefit from guidance at some time in our lives. I am a sensitive and empathic clinician who is interested in working with people to discover answers to questions and problems that get in the way of achieving goals and enjoying life. I believe that therapy is a process of building trust, examining patterns, and making connections between past and present, and that the process can improve one's outlook and functioning in the world.

We all experience difficult moments in our lives, and usually we have the tools to handle them. But when we consistently feel overwhelmed, stuck, trapped, fearful, helpless or empty, psychotherapy can help us become more conscious of what's behind our troubles and move to resolve them. as a result, relationships, self-esteem and life circumstances can improve. I work to develop a caring, supportive and trusting relationship with my clients, so they can feel safe to explore their past, honestly look at their feelings, thoughts and behaviors, and move towards positive change.

Hi and thanks for taking a look at my profile. Finding the right therapist can feel overwhelming, especially since most of us are doing so during a time of stress or crisis. My approach to therapy is very relational and experiential. I believe that healing and transformation can happen only in the context of a safe and supportive therapeutic relationship. It's a huge step to reach out to a therapist for help. I hope I can make it as easy as possible for you and look forward to talking further to see if we're a good therapy match.

I believe that the most important relationship we develop is with our inner self. People often get caught up in repetitive patterns that may hinder their work, love, or personal relationships caused by past traumas or disconnection from oneself. This may inhibit them from being able to live a fulfilling life. The process of getting in touch with often unknown aspects of oneself enables one to lead a fuller life. Lack of such a connection with our psychological center leads in varying degrees to emotional homelessness, emptiness in one's work, and personal relationships. In my publications I explore the notion of "inner home".

In addition to my therapy work with adults, adolescents and couples I teach and supervise at several graduate and postgraduate training centers, and I write about the patient-therapist relationship.
There is an intriguing complexity at the heart of therapy. Patient and therapist meet together to consider difficulties in the patient's life. From this shared experience an interesting and challenging thing happens. Versions of the difficulties being addressed in therapy begin to emerge in the therapy relationship. The question is not whether this happens, but rather whether it is noticed and discussed. So, therapy, when it works well, comes to be not just about the patient's life, it becomes a vital piece of that life. Emotionally meaningful experience is generated and dealt with in the therapy itself.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
