Having trouble finding, maintaining a relationship? Do you struggle with emotional eating and body image/self-esteem? See me quoted in New York Post, "Is This The Most Dangerous Diet Ever?" by Doree Lewak. Are you pulling your hair out? Trouble sleeping? Feeling stuck, hopeless? I'll help you get what you want sooner, using a variety of techniques to overcome your problems. It may be scary to reach out for help, but it's so much better than continuing down the same unsatisfying path. I listen actively and respond immediately to your concerns with warmth, understanding, and practical suggestions.

Within this approach, I work with individuals, couples, families, and intimate networks to develop and work toward personal growth and development.
I offer an affirming and non-judgmental safe space where collaboration and empowerment are central to the therapeutic process. Using integrative and holistic methods, we will work at a pace that is most comfortable for you to reflect, heal, and be heard. Although my professional and personal experience regarding LGBTQNB, poly/CNM, kink/BDSM, SW, and POC communities inform my practice, I understand the importance of recognizing and acknowledging individuality and personal experience in all its forms.

She treats children, adults and couples who suffer from mental health challenges throughout their course of life.
We all go through challenging times in our lives no matter how old we are. Some people choose to deal with those challenges on their own and some make the choice to share their thoughts, concerns, pain, anger, frustrations with someone who can help them go through resolution of their conflicts. Being in treatment can change profoundly someone’s life only if one wishes and wants to do that.

Over the years I have found that I am particularly adept at helping clients manage and reduce anxiety; recover from childhood abuse or neglect; change harmful relationship and communication patterns; bring awareness and relief from manic or borderline tendencies; recover from addiction; and, increase self efficacy and self respect.
People often come to therapy feeling a need to fix or change some troubling aspect of themselves. What can be surprising, however, is that the therapeutic process may begin as a journey of self-acceptance rather than fixing or changing. Most of us have not been fortunate enough to have people in our lives who can listen without judgement or agenda. That is my job as your therapist. By truly listening, I will learn what the world looks like through your eyes and this understanding of your inner world will help me guide you through the challenging journey of self-acceptance as the gateway to personal transformation.

If you are looking for extra support through current difficulties, wanting to disrupt patterns of behavior that you’ve outgrown, or are looking for a partner in manifesting growth, reach out to me.
The parts of ourselves that we struggle with are sometimes our greatest assets. Therapy can be a place to better realize our strengths and identify where long-term patterns of narratives and behaviors are no longer serving us. I am passionate about working with LGBTQ and POC on topics such as: gender/sexual identity, anxiety, depression, OCD, acculturation, racial identity, social skills, and relationships. My therapeutic approach incorporates both systemic and relational pieces. We do not exist in a vacuum. All of our experiences shape the person we are today.

I work with individuals, couples, families and groups virtually or in person at Downtown Somatic Therapy.
Do you find yourself feeling stuck, unseen, or disconnected? Have these feelings intensified after 2+ years of pandemic? Are you wanting more from your relationships and your work? Do things like creativity and embodiment feel elusive and out of reach? Or are you a performer or achiever who is often put on a pedestal by those around you, idolized yet at a distance from the kind of care you actually want?

Do you wonder, despite all the outward signs of a successful life, why you aren't happier or more fulfilled? Perhaps you're frustrated or anxious about work, making it difficult to be around other people or find enjoyment. Or you're unsure about the job or relationship you've ended up in. You may find yourself sleeping less, eating more, or feeling increasingly "stuck."

We develop relationship patterns early in our lives and repeat important aspects of them going forward. Many of the obstacles that emerge in our efforts to achieve our goals and make fulfilling lives for ourselves follow on our unwitting repetition of these patterns. They made sense then, but impede you now. My approach to therapy will involve getting to know you in some depth, in order to use the relationship we create to identify these patterns and allow you to more consciously shape your life.

It's not easy to find a therapist so I hope that what I tell you about me and the way I work will make it easier. I help people resolve anxiety and depression, particularly in the context of LGBTQ issues, problematic governmental leadership, pandemic related anxiety/isolation, self-esteem, body-image, creative blocks, sexual/relational difficulties. I'm down to earth, easy to talk to, non-judgmental and interactive. I work to minimize and overcome the shame and self-blame people frequently feel. All backgrounds/lifestyles are welcome. I create a safe environment for individuals and couples. Skype and phone sessions available.

I love working with individuals and couples who want to bring meaning into their life and find satisfaction in spite of adversity and misfortune. I bring a spirit of optimism and a confidence in people's ability to learn and grow. My professional training in Clinical Social Work only enhanced my natural, easy way of connecting with people. I have been practicing psychotherapy in New York City since 1980 after receiving my B.S.W. from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and my Master's degree at Carleton School of Social Work in Ottawa, Canada.

I have a passion for working with couples at all stages of the life cycle. Premaritals, empty nesters, LGBT couples, couples with young children seeking to balance parenting with time for self and partner, couples needing support around sexuality and commitment issues, couples at a crossroads.... Much of my early therapeutic training was in Hospice bereavement counseling. Through that experience I became drawn to therapeutic encounters with the potential for spiritual renewal. In recent years I've connected with that initial sense of generativity and meaning through the practice of couples therapy, most notably in work as a premarital counselor.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
