I am an interactive psychotherapist with advanced experience in Couples Therapy, Cognitive Therapy and Modern Psychodynamic Therapy. I help individuals and couples suffering from symptoms of depression, anxiety or problems in their relationships. Often clients come to me feeling stuck or confused about relationships and careers that keep them from engaging more fully in life. I help them to understand the problems, remove the obstacles, and live a life more in tune with their true nature. Having grown up in a family of therapists and worked through many of my own similar issues, I know personally and professionally the vast rewards of good therapy.

I listen, carefully, to you. We can discuss, together, what you want to be different in your life or your relationships. Reducing stress and understanding sadness, indecision or work problems- can all help your mood. Perhaps you want to find a meaningful romantic relationship or improve other relationships. My approach includes helping you to clarify what works and what doesn't work in your life, within a confidential setting. Often speaking with a professional can bring some relief to feelings of depression, anxiety and uncertainty.

How do we know when we're healed, "fixed", back to ourselves? There's a lightening up, a kinder voice in our heads, a bursting generosity and restored sense of purpose. And how does one get there with an integrative therapist? We start with The Here and Now. Forming I Fear/ I Wish statements. Figuring out which Selves survived that little t or Big T trauma. Listing the constricting beliefs of your Inner Critic. Inviting you (and your partner?) to play with new self-talk, role-play, power poses or traditions. Maybe diagramming intergenerational intel to re-write the future.

I am especially interested in relationship issues, be they intimate relationships, friendships, or something more undefined.
I specialize in individual, couples, and group psychotherapy with adolescents, adults, and older adults. I operate from a psychodynamic (relational) framework, although I have the training and experience to adapt my style to best suit each client's individual needs. I encourage curiosity in the therapy room with an emphasis on reserving judgment; I believe that through increased awareness of ourselves, as opposed to labeling our thoughts, feelings, and actions as good or bad, the more we can grow. I strive to create a safe, intimate environment that balances nurturing and support with challenging one's preconceived notions and beliefs.

My clients (individuals and couples) come to me with challenges in their relationships, adjusting to life transitions, navigating the role of parenthood, and at times, the inexplicable feeling of emptiness or feeling alone. Feelings and moods associated with these and other struggles, such as anxiety and depression can manifest as self-defeating behavior and create a version of ourselves and our lives which is not what we want.

I am an active partner in therapy.
We are surrounded by a story that unwanted feelings are pathological, an illness to be eradicated by taking medication, relentlessly policing thoughts, and consuming a never-ending supply of self-care products and services. Taken alone, that narrative can conceal deeper causes of distress by focusing solely on how well you adjust to and cope with their effects. Lasting relief requires a more holistic approach, one that accurately identifies and addresses the personal, social, and structural barriers that are keeping you stuck.

As a couples counselor, I help partners resolve conflicts through learning how to compromise and how to talk to each other more respectfully. Couples reach specific agreements which may involve sex and intimacy, money, substance use, in-laws, parenting, or household responsibilities. I establish clear interactive guidelines which focus on not bringing up the negative past, playing the blame game, or making dismissive comments about the relationship. A core premise of my work is that almost almost any relationship problem can be resolved as long as couples are committed to each other and open to changing how they communicate.

Additionally, I do couples therapy.
I view therapy as a chance to solve problems, improve relationships, get support, and increase self-awareness by exploring your thoughts and feelings. I work with individuals and couples using a modern psychodynamic approach. My style is interactive and engaged as we work to resolve current problems and explore how the past has shaped you.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
