My 4-year postgraduate training in Family and Couples Therapy at the Ackerman Institute supports my focus on relational work for individuals as well as in work with people in relationship with each other.
We all experience periods when we feel unsure of ourselves, discouraged, overwhelmed, anxious, or depressed. We also each have unique resources, strengths, and coping skills. Private, public, and communally shared experiences challenge us to evolve into versions of ourselves that have never existed before. Our genders and cultures color and affect our experiences. Therapy enables us to choose from among our ever-shifting resources as we move through our lives.

I work with individuals, couples, families and groups virtually or in person at Downtown Somatic Therapy.
Do you find yourself feeling stuck, unseen, or disconnected? Have these feelings intensified after 2+ years of pandemic? Are you wanting more from your relationships and your work? Do things like creativity and embodiment feel elusive and out of reach? Or are you a performer or achiever who is often put on a pedestal by those around you, idolized yet at a distance from the kind of care you actually want?

I wholeheartedly believe that people get better in the context of relationships. I am a caring, attuned, and enthusiastic therapist, passionate about working with families, couples, and individuals. Therapy is an opportunity to make meaningful changes in our lives, and more meaningfully understand ourselves and our loved ones. Meaningful therapy is the opportunity to explore what has not been said. My aim as a therapist is to support individuals in bringing clarity to all relationships, and strengthening relationships clients choose.

If you find yourself struggling in relationship to those most important to you or are looking to forge an individual therapeutic relationship, please reach out.
I work with individuals, couples and families navigating a myriad of struggles. Some are questioning how to best be in connection with those they care about and looking for ways out of repeated negative cycles. Others are simply hoping to be supported and witnessed as they navigate life's many pains and joys. My greatest professional hope is that I can provide both.

Sometimes living in today's society can bring about many challenges. Some of these challenges may consist of racial trauma, feeling isolated, feeling depressed, feeling anxious, and not understanding why things happen in your personal lives. Usually when you are feeling these emotions you tend to search for healing in places that you feel is best at the moment, but you do not have to do it alone.

I work collaboratively—with couples, individuals and families—to define your goals for desired change.
We all get stuck at times. Reaching out for help can be the first step towards positive change. Recognizing dissatisfaction with an aspect of your life, or that solutions you've tried are not working, creates opportunity to allow in other perspectives. Problems can feel immense, and grow in isolation; conversely, talking with a therapist can shed light, open up unseen possibilities and diminish problems. Whether you're struggling with relationship or work struggles, identity issues, life transitions, depression, anxiety, or other life issues, therapy can help you build more meaning, balance, and ability to handle life's challenges.

I have experience with a wide range of approaches and completed advanced training in couples and family therapy, trauma-informed clinical practice, palliative care, and prolonged grief therapy.
I believe therapy can help individuals harness their strengths and improve coping around challenging feelings and experiences; such as a new cancer diagnosis, chronic illness, terminal illness, grief, anxiety, stress, caregiver issues, life transitions and relationship issues. At a time when you might feel disoriented, stuck or uncertain about how to move forward, I can work with you to explore any potential barriers and identify pathways for growth. To facilitate your navigation, I strive to create an environment that feels safe and free from judgment, where you can feel seen and heard.

Everyone deserves an opportunity for growth. The therapeutic relationship is a trusting process. I use empathy, humor, and positive regard to create a safe space to discuss distress people experience throughout the course of life. I encourage my clients to identify and focus on the things they can control when dealing with depression and anxiety. Change is challenging and often unavoidable. I work with adults (over age 21) who are looking to overcome fears and struggles by helping them learn effective ways to cope and set and maintain boundaries. My goal is to guide individuals on the road to healing, empowerment, and success.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
