My approach is goal-oriented and integrated – pulling from multiple disciplines like Acceptance & Commitment Therapy, Dialectic Behavioral Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Solutions Focused Therapy. While keeping the individual’s needs in mind, an intentional humanistic approach remains at the forefront. Ultimately we’re going to need to have a meaningful relationship if we’re going to create change.

As MFT's, it is our goal to help couples, families, and individuals become "unstuck" by creating a safe and collaborative environment.
Are you feeling hopeless or stuck in life or your relationships? Do you feel like you've been doing the same thing over and over and getting no results? Do you want to feel connected to your partner? I believe those who seek out therapy have a willingness to challenge themselves and desire to achieve self-growth. Sometimes we do not know how to adjust to a new life transition or break the pattern of a continuous cycle. At LIC Marriage and Family Therapy we establish effective communication and positive self-esteem to help empower our clients to understand themselves and their partner by acceptance and validation.

Are you finding yourself constantly overwhelmed by anxiety? Are the symptoms of your lingering anxiety impacting the quality of your life? I know exactly what you are experiencing: the pounding chest, tightened muscles, clenched jaw, and on/off cold sweats. People often suffer from anxiety for many years without seeking treatment. I believe that holistic and evidence based practices can reduce anxiety and panic, and I look forward to teaching you tools to help take your life back. I also work with LGBTQ couples who are struggling with a variety of concerns like sexual/intimacy issues, communication, codependency, and infidelity.

The sage Lao Tzu said, "At the center of your being you have the answer; you know who you are and you know what you want". There is a deep drive inside of us to form meaningful connections to ourselves, to family, and to community. This is a journey you do not have to take alone. My clients have come to me when going through such life changes, crisis, burnout, the end of a relationship, or a major job shift. I help them navigate these rocky waters and provide a safe haven for them to be seen, heard, validated, understood, and - if need be - challenged.

We all experience "stuckness" sometimes and feel disconnected from those we love most. Maybe you find yourself revisiting the same old territory in your mind on a loop, and find that it is hard to make a change on your own. Or maybe you have faced a moment of rupture in a close relationship, and find your world torn apart. Perhaps you are noticing unhelpful patterns in yourself or your relationships, and are now feeling ready to explore them. Or you might find yourself avoiding social situations, even though you have a sense it might help you feel better.

I am the author of three relationship books.
I help patients deal with blocks that prevent them having the best possible life and healthy, loving relationships. I use an empathetic, psychodynamic approach but also employ cognitive techniques - i.e. exercises during the session and homework. I want to help people notice and change their self-destructive patterns. I also help artists uncover the roots of their struggles with motivation and self-doubt.

In addition to specializing in identity, I support clients experiencing depression, anxiety, OCD, trauma, and relationship issues.
My goal as a therapist is to create a supportive environment for folks to explore their gender and sexuality. Perhaps you identify as queer, bisexual, lesbian, gay, pansexual, asexual, trans, nonbinary, agender, poly, kinky, something else, everything, and/or nothing at all. You deserve to have a space where you can learn more about the different parts of yourself without judgment. As a queer person who has sought out therapy myself, I know how challenging it can be to find an affirming therapist. Even if your identity isn’t central to your therapeutic goals, know that every part of you will be welcome in our work.

I believe the most important component to therapy is developing a trusting relationship so there can be honesty and deeper confidence in saying whatever needs to be stated.
I work with individuals in a supportive and creative environment to open dialogue and explore life's challenges. The opportunity to engage in verbal or non-verbal expression can support to reframe the past, their thoughts, emotions, life patterns, and to discover a deeper awareness of themselves.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
