I have over 25 years of experience providing individual, group, and couples therapy.
I am honored that my clients share their deepest secrets with me every day. I am grateful for the trust they place in me and I value their need for confidentiality. I make an effort to listen to my clients and hear what they say to learn what they need to grow. Every client is a person who is much greater than their problem behavior or diagnosis. While I have extensive training in treating trauma and sexual behavior problems, I also have experience and training in treating other mental health problems such as: Depression, Anxiety, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Panic Disorder, ADHD, and chemical as well as process addictions.

My experience in counseling includes working with individuals, couples, and families.
While my passion is helping people find the joy in life, I am also dedicated to improving the counseling profession. As a past President of both the American Counseling Association of Missouri and the Missouri Mental Health Counselors Association, I have worked to help professional counselors and the field of counseling in the state of Missouri. I extend this focus of helping the profession to teaching and supervising individuals who are pursuing professional counseling as a career.

The clients I serve are often at a crossroads in their life story and unsure of how to close one chapter and begin anew. Clients I enjoy working with recognize that counseling continues outside of the session in self reflection, exploring behavior change, and shifting how we think and relate to ourselves. I find that counseling helps meet goals and needs as diverse as the client, and sometimes goals arise throughout the course of the relationship. No one needs a "good reason" to come to counseling, for the desire to reach out and try will always be sufficient.

I enjoy fostering healthy exploration for adults, adolescents, and couples processing issues of differentiation, self-esteem, anxiety, family of origin, relational health, spirituality, and more.
I approach counseling with the belief that I encounter every client in the middle of a story. Within these stories, individuals are influenced by their relational contexts and histories––therefore, what they have been through is worth exploring. At the same time, I believe all are active agents in their present and future––I seek to empower clients toward change while fostering awareness of what has shaped them. In the context of safety, individuals are able to begin embracing agency and taking new risks which might otherwise feel inaccessible or overwhelming. Through these new risks, freedom and growth is possible.

I have worked extensively with children, teens, adults, and families dealing with issues such as anxiety, depression, stress, self-harm, suicidal ideation, trauma, parenting issues, relationship problems, and more.
I often say, counseling can be a bit like cleaning out a closet. You have to take things out, go through and organize them, and then put them back where they need to go. In a similar fashion, counseling can be messy, but with time and hard work, can lead to healthier, more enjoyable living. Throughout this life, we all have our individual struggles and hardships, but we weren't meant to carry them alone. No matter who you are or what you've been through, there is hope. In our sessions together, I strive to come alongside you in the pursuit of that hope and restorative healing.

Therapy is an experience where human beings learn to live differently. Differently is the key word. Different can look like less depression, more spontaneity, or deeper and more mutual relationships. Different can be learning to say "yes," "no," or "maybe." Different can be improved physical health, less anxiety, or sustained sobriety. When one begins treatment there's usually a percolating idea of what needs to be different. Helping you clarify the ways you'd like to live differently, what has gotten in your way up to this point, and how those changes can be made is psychotherapy.

Nothing needs to change in the circumstances or particulars of our lives to rest as peace. In fact, the more we attempt to manipulate and alter the particulars of our lives in order to experience peace, the further we will (seem to) move from what we want. What to do? Nothing. Relax. Give up. Release the grip. Resign ourselves to leaving everything alone, letting everything be as it is. We will find that we have always been standing knee-deep in the very peace we have been looking for. What a relief.

I use the Gottman Method Couples Therapy (Level 2 Trained), Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Cognitive Behavior Therapy for individuals, couples, families, and groups.
"There is nothing you can tell me that won't strike me as beautiful and human" -Cheryl Strayed. Major life changes, invalidating home/social lives, past trauma, and current stressors affect moods, behaviors, and relationships, often leaving us repeating unhelpful patterns. When our attempts to cope with and repair issues no longer work, it's time to seek therapy. I will collaborate with you and provide a warm, safe, nonjudgmental space so you feel supported while you develop interpersonal skills, learn to manage emotions, strengthen relationships, and improve self-awareness so you can make changes toward living the life you desire.

I have a passion for working with Christian couples longing to strengthen their relationship.
This is a common pattern in many couples’ relationships and maybe this describes you: prior to getting married, you had a dream. A dream that your relationship would be like the ones portrayed in romantic movies, a life of bliss because you found your perfect person. Then, at some point in your marriage, you asked this question: “How did we get here?” Instead of a foundation of joy and security, you and your spouse find yourselves stuck in conflict cycles that leave you feeling bitter, distant, and hopeless.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
