This is a good way to begin a therapeutic relationship between the therapist and the individual which leads to healing.
Coming to therapy can be a huge step in someone's life. People come to therapy to improve their lives from many different and difficult experiences. Trauma can affect people in many different ways. Using different methods and teaching tools can help improve someone's life. Trauma can be from bullying, car accidents, spousal abuse, child abuse, and other life experiences. Therapy and training give you back the inner peace you need. My approach is humbly understanding what you are going through.

I believe that therapy is a mutual relationship, a partnership involving mutual respect and empathetic understanding. Counseling should be more than just a method of solving a problem or achieving a goal - it should provide a way of opening us up to an awareness of ourselves - facilitating personal growth and development of character. I will not presume to know all of the answers and I don't believe in quick fixes. I promise to work with you side-by-side as you gain new insight and understanding in overcoming past and present events; obtaining knowledge and resources that will equip you in moving forward. We are in this together.

For 30+ years I have worked with people struggling with depression, anxiety, marital, family, child, career/work, military and trauma issues. I help them better understand themselves, those around them and how they can get the outcomes they want. People who talk to me feel understood and respected. They get practical direction that makes sense and gets results. I help people find the words to express what is confusing or difficult and to identify the steps needed to get the outcomes they want. I help them gain confidence and identify the inner resources needed for relief and success.

I approach counseling with clients like a door. Not every locked door can be unlocked with the same key. Different locked doors require different keys to open. What works for one client, may not work for another. This means I work with many different approaches. From Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Psychoanalytic, to Constructionist. However, my main counseling approach, foundation, is Humanistic, Person Centered. This focuses on the therapeutic relationship between the counselor and the client. As a counselor my goal will be to build the relationship with my clients by providing an empathic understanding of my client’s point of view.

I believe in the power of the therapeutic relationship and its healing potential.
Your mind races with intrusive thoughts that cause you to worry about everything, or you can't forget about that horrible event that happened to you in your past. Or maybe you lost an important person in your life or experienced a change that took away that feeling of life being normal. You try to move on with life, but you're angry, sad, confused, or feel helpless. Believe me, I’ve been there and done that. And if any of this resonates with you, keep reading or take a look at my website, www.hillside-counseling.com, to find out more about me and what I'm all about.

Everyday we make choices in our lives. The choices we make, whether positive or negative, affects our emotions. I recognize it is natural for individuals to develop habits of feelings, attitudes and assumptions due to past experiences. I work with people to help them learn to make different choices to live more in the moment with less fears and anxieties about the future. My desire is for people to find their way to become their authentic selves.

Are you struggling to meet your full potential? Does fear seem to get in the way of your true desires? Do your self-perceptions affect other aspects of your life such as your relationships and/or career? The journey of therapy is one of self-reflection and exploration, self-awareness, and growth. I was trained with the Humanistic belief that many factors of one's life play a role in our development and fuel our thought and behavior patterns later in life. Together, we can develop a treatment plan that works best for you and encompasses your current needs and goals.

My professional life has been consistently focused on serving people in need. After obtaining my bachelors degree from Michigan State University, I initially worked in the Governor's office in Lansing. I then decided to exercise my entrepreneurial spirit and transitioned into helping guide economically challenged families to find better housing solutions by developing low cost single family homes and developing large tracts of vacant and abandoned land. This work of helping families led me to desire doing work even more impactful, which led to my returning to school and obtaining my Master's degree in Clinical Psychology from the Michigan School of Professional Psychology.

I have extensive experience working with people of all ages struggling with life stressors, mental health disorders, substance abuse, grief and loss, anxiety, depression, sexual abuse, and PTSD. My background includes being a Clinical Director of a substance abuse agency, as well as an Adjunct Professor at Rochester College and OCC. I have also worked assessing military personnel for mental health issues. We live in an ever-changing world, and with any change comes stress and grief. These emotions can be transient, or open the door for other issues to come forward.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
