As a therapist I see each individual I work with as unique and special, and as such, I seek to develop a therapeutic relationship which first and foremost provides each client, the opportunity to clearly and effectively formulate and then work on their own personal goals and objectives.
My guiding principle as a therapist is that we are put on this Earth to fully enjoy and participate in life. I have several years experience working as a social worker and educator in several different capacities and contexts. My practice focuses on how family of origin paradigms as well as other life experiences, can keep us from reaching our full potential in life and how becoming aware of these can free us to become more fulfilled human beings.

I partner with a psychopharmacologist when medication is necessary.
I specialize in meeting the needs of creative individuals struggling with depression, anxiety, or other mental health issues. Because I am the author of ten critically acclaimed books, I also work with aspiring writers, helping them to gain publication. My work is intensely relational and always focused on real results. I believe that clients are paying for a service and that they deserve to see measurable and lasting change. Along these same lines, my treatment is often relatively brief. We identify the problem(s) and the steps to change along with a timeline for these steps. Clients become active agents in their own recoveries.

I practice soul work, helping restore and heal our connection to our deepest Self. I especially work with military and veterans, spiritual seekers, writers and artists in all genres, mid-life crises, men's issues, trauma and abuse survivors. I welcome clients seeking positive and comprehensive growth and change, a discovery or restoration of their gifts and creativity, and a deep healing relationship "out of the box." I do not practice conventional therapy for merely repairing our issues and adjusting to unhappy conditions. Rather, I nurture the unique soul and spirit in each person toward achieving meaning and creativity.

As a therapist, I work not as a "shrink" but an "enhancer," helping clients work through past problems, engage the challenges of the present, and move towards a more fulfilling future. I am client-focused rather than technique-focused because each client-therapist relationship is unique, and techniques should be employed selectively to optimize change and growth. That said, clients can expect that I will:
1) Act as a strong ally, adding emotional and intellectual energy to their efforts to change,
2) Provide insight and fresh perspective that takes them beyond their usual patterns of perceiving and responding to life circumstances.

After over 20 years of working with individuals, couples, groups and families in various settings, I have learned that, most importantly, people want to be heard, seen and understood.
Are you finding yourself at a crossroads? Do you have a big decision to make? Do you want to learn to identify and better communicate what you need and want, in your personal life, with family, your partner, your friends, or at work? Are you struggling with painful emotions or a difficult past? Or are you simply looking for a safe space to process your thoughts and feelings as a way of engaging in self-care? If any of these questions resonate with you, I encourage you to take the next step and reach out to me. I know that deciding on a therapist can be a daunting task. Let's talk it through together.

Couples Counseling Therapists
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
