I have 20 years of experience as a clinical social worker and prior to that was a home-based family counselor. I view my role as helping the person clarify troubling life experiences, past and present, and to understand their responses to those experiences. These may include: difficult relationships and families, unresolvable ambiguity; agonies of adolescence; substance and alcohol abuse, or legacies of trauma and existential dilemmas. I believe each person contains the seeds of their own solution and I work to nurture that individual solution. This happens in a relationship where it becomes safe to "say anything."

Hi, and welcome. For many people, the decision to get help can be a difficult one. I see your visit to my profile as a sign of strength and a refusal to give up. Loneliness, the inability to enjoy life, excessive worry or fear, anxiety in social situations, unhappiness or problems in personal, professional or marital relationships, not knowing what to do personally or professionally, even substance "abuse" and PTSD are issues that are interpersonal, not biological. They can be overcome within a genuinely understanding, compassionate, active, and patient therapeutic relationship.

In the beginning there was fun, excitement and sex in your relationship. Now your relationship has moved to roommate status and you don’t know how to get the spark back. You love your partner but lately things have not felt the same. TV and phones have replaced long conversations and kids take up any “adult” time the two of you can have together. Sometimes you find yourself thinking some pretty negative things about your partner and sometimes they come out of your mouth, which leads to a fight or worse, stoney silence.

I enjoy working with people who are struggling with substance use, whether they are just beginning to question their use and habits or they have experienced chronic relapse and feel hopeless. I believe part of that process is ensuring they are informed of options available and helping them discover their “why.” I have experience supporting people in identifying their strengths, finding coping skills, and creating measurable, attainable goals. I am skilled at navigating treatment systems/levels of care in Massachusetts. I have experience with medical detoxification protocols and can discuss options for medication-supported treatment.

My ideal client would be new to therapy, though motivated to change. I am aware of the challenges that come with seeking therapy and want to be a support to those who are hesitant with the process. Ideally, I would like a client who is self-aware, receptive to feedback, and willing to hold themselves accountable.

Maybe you’re experiencing depression, anxiety, trauma, substance abuse, compulsive behaviors, or something else entirely. Things friends and family aren’t equipped to help you deal with. I can help. I’m Doug Maesk, Licensed Mental Health Counselor, and I was born and raised in New England, and lived there for 30 years. So I get you. I understand your experience. I know what it's like. If your loved one's substance use has become unmanageable, you’ve tried everything but refuse to give up, and are desperately seeking hope- I know how you feel. I was raised in a large, chaotic household, and my own adult child has struggled with alcohol addiction and anxiety. Refusing to give up on my son, I found a way out for my family.

Have you thought about seeing a therapist, but the idea of talking to a stranger stops you from taking the next step? Perhaps you have needed this for a long time, and you have finally decided to take the next step? My style is warm, collaborative, and down to earth. Lets face it, we live in a stressful society where we need additional support. I know reaching out can be difficult so I try to make the process as simple as possible. You can call, email and/or text me to set up an appointment. I maintain a highly responsive, accessible, and concierge-type practice so you can have as much or little support you in along the way!

I use Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in my practice but consider myself eclectic in my framework. Incredible things happen when we ask for help. Contact me to explore a new journey!

Life is never straightforward, and we are often left facing changes that are both surprising and difficult to navigate. Our shift into a new role, a disappointment at work, a problem in a relationship can cause us to feel anxious, angry, sad, and confused. We try our best to manage these struggles and their resulting shifts in mood and achievement, sometimes using coping strategies that turn out to be more problematic than helpful. We are left thinking, what happened? Will I ever feel like my old self? Why can't I just get over this?

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
