My name is Krystyna Thompson and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, as well as a clinician trained in EMDR. I work with couples, individuals, and families on a variety of emotional and relational issues. As a therapist, it is important to me that I partner with my clients to create an individualized plan that fits best to encourage recovery. Each person is different and I hope to help you overcome the obstacles that have stopped you from feeling happy, fulfilled, and joyous in your life. I enjoy connecting with clients by using a down-to-earth approach (and a little humor at times) to achieve the very best outcomes from therapy. I work with adults on a variety of concerns, including (but not limited to): anxiety, depression, adjustment difficulties, college stress, phase of life concerns, divorce, blended family concerns, anger management, serious acute/chronic illness, ADHD, grief/loss, and trauma/PTSD. I am LGBTQ+ allied. I also enjoy working with corrections employees, law enforcement, firefighters, EMT, dispatch, and professionals in ER settings. We are all a work in progress!

I have experience working with teens and adults through individual, couple and family sessions. I help my clients by addressing a variety of concerns, with a focus on treating anxiety, depression, relationship issues, loss and grief. I strive to create a safe and supportive therapeutic environment that evokes growth and positive change without judgment.

I currently work for Catholic Charities and have done so since 2007. I have been working with children, adolescents, couples, and families for nearly 30 yrs years who are experiencing acute or chronic mental health issues. Some of those issues include but are not limited to: grief/loss, life stressors/traumas, depression, anxiety, relationship problems, behavioral issues in children, and ADHD. When I ask my client's what they are hoping to gain from therapy, most will summarize that they simply want to feel better! So that is what we (you and me) will set out to accomplish.

Mikki is passionate about supporting kids and individuals as they discover their path to emotional wellness. She has dedicated her career to treating children, adolescents, and young adults with mental and behavioral health needs, and understands that all of our paths look a little different. Some of our journeys to wellness are filled with winding roads, some with large barriers, and some are hidden deep in the woods. Mikki’s goal is to partner with children, families, and individuals as they walk these paths, because nobody should have to do this work alone.

Utilizing a collaborative approach to healing, I provide support and acceptance to all who cross the threshold of my office. Grounded in a Narrative theoretical orientation, I view clients as the experts of their own lives and I aim to help empower them while amplifying their voice. I believe every individual deserves to be heard and seen without judgement and I provide this to all clients through a strong therapeutic alliance and relational depth.

We will work together so that you can begin to heal, learn how to keep growing and improving yourself and work towards your goals. I have a tremendous understanding of the social, emotional, psychological, and societal impacts of Adverse Childhood Experiences, and am aware of the importance of identifying and addressing toxic stress in both children and adults. I am also well-versed on the numerous symptoms of trauma. I understand how these symptoms can perpetuate other secondary effects such as addiction, eating disorders, difficulties with learning and processing information, and building and sustaining relationships.

I am an LMHC(Licensed Mental Health Counselor), board certified in the State of Iowa. Over the past 25 years I have had the privilege of helping children, adolescents and families by working for 13 years at Orchard Place as a residential therapist and school based therapist and then I worked at Broadlawns Focus High School doing individual, group and family therapy. I have done private practice for the past 12 years. I worked at New Heights Counseling for 6 years and am now starting my own private practice in West Des Moines in October, 2023. I accept adults, teens, families and couples.

I’m also a registered play therapist supervisor and a nationally certified counselor. I have experience working clinically, serving children, families, couples, and adults with a variety of mental health diagnoses at college campuses, in-home Children's Therapeutic Services and Supports, and outpatient mental health services. I’m also a member of the Iowa Mental Health Counselors Association and the Association of Counselor Education and Supervision.
