As a Connecticut licensed clinical psychologist for more than 40 years, I practice individual, couples, and group therapy. In my doctoral and post-doctoral training at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Yale University, and throughout my years of clinical practice, I have had extensive training in psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, mindfulness and meditation. I try to empathize with clients' feelings, and foster a safe, respectful, collaborative environment where in-depth exploration can occur. I can help you arrive at your own insights and conclusions. If you like, I can also offer suggestions to help translate insight into behavioral change.

After years of training and varied professional and life experiences, I have created an integrative approach where you can feel seen and heard as your relationship with yourself and others (and perhaps your thoughts) changes. My clinical approach infuses mindfulness, somatics, behaviorism, developmental attachment theory, neuroscience, and compassion to promote increased clarity and fulfillment.

I work with Adolescents, Adults, Couples and Families.
A friend and colleague once wrote "I have known Debra since she took a position in 1994 as a Clinical Psychologist in our regional hospital. Physicians, nurses, and I were soon taken by her warmth, compassion, and ability to help others, even those with the most difficult of problems. She demonstrated an affinity for children, adolescents, and families, having an instinctual playful approach with children, easy connection with adolescents, and sensitivity toward families." Since that time, I - Debra - have attempted to join others along their path and walk with them toward a better future.

My training includes adult psychodynamic psychotherapy, couples and family therapy, child/adolescent therapy, Hypnotherapy and EMDR.
Asking for help can be challenging for many people, especially when you’re not feeling your best. Given the range of options, choosing the right therapist for you may feel overwhelming and confusing. Having an appreciation of the value of the therapist-client fit, I am committed to providing a comfortable and safe environment where issues may be better understood. As a seasoned therapist, I have worked with children, adolescents and adults who are struggling with concerns related to self-esteem, school, ADHD, work, family, life stage transitions, eating disorders, illness and losses.

I believe in the ever-present possibility of growth and the power of the therapeutic relationship to facilitate productive change in regard to what is not working or troublesome in people's lives. As a psychotherapist, I engage in confidential collaborative relationships grounded in respect, empathy, and safety in order to explore and help free people from patterns of functioning that are generally old, now maladaptive and personally limiting. Through achieving a deeper sense of self-understanding and personal growth, I believe in the increased capacity to live more satisfying emotional, social, and professional lives.

The world has profoundly changed for most of us in the last years. Depression, anxiety, adjustment and relationship troubles...Are you locked in a destructive cycle that you can't break alone? Has some traumatic event in your life continued to haunt you even after months or years? Emotional problems often develop if we feel that we have lost control over some critical area of our lives. Overwhelming feelings can seem to come from nowhere, isolating us or holding us back. The right therapist can help you to feel less alone, find relief and get your life on track. Damaged relationships can be repaired, becoming deeper and healthier.

In the past 17 years I have become quite adept at working with clients who have trauma histories. Trauma can be major or it can be minor. I find that all human beings have experienced some form of trauma in their lives and this trauma often contributes to our current challenges. I use a method called EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) with many of my clients. This is a physiological method that is both quick and effective. So whether you are suffering from depression, anxiety, addiction, ect. I can help you both rapidly and dramatically.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
