We all struggle in some way as a parent, spouse, friend, and individual.
“Hope is important because it can make the present moment less difficult to bear. If we believe that tomorrow will be better, we can bear a hardship today.” – Thich Nhat Hahn. Therapy is a journey we are often reluctant to take. Once we begin that journey, our mind & body become exposed to new thoughts, emotions, and experiences. My goal as a therapist is to assist the client to focus on developing achievable goals, coping strategies, problem solving skills, and alleviating symptoms related to life’s social & emotional challenges. Together we will create a treatment plan which will meet your social & emotional needs.

Wherever you are in your therapy journey, just starting out and have never been or have been in therapy for some time, I am happy to meet and join you toward reaching your goals. One of the most important factors when searching for a therapist is making sure it is a good fit. For me, good fit means feeling accepted and not judged.

I treat people with depression, anxiety, relationship issues, life transitions and loss.
At times life can be unusually painful, scary and confusing. With the COVID-19 virus we are living through such a time. Generally speaking, we may feel anxious, sad, discouraged and alone, and not know what to do. When someone listens to us carefully, we learn how to listen to ourselves, to our own inner life. Talking things out with someone in this special way can help us become clearer about who we are, our strengths and also our self-defeating ways, so we can move forward with an improved sense of self and direction.

To seek therapy takes courage and curiosity. The process of therapy gives us the opportunity to explore the impact of the multiple systems with which we are connected- family, work, home, friends, community- in the context of an affirming relationship with the therapist. Through this process, we come to better understand how we have interacted with these systems over time.

Do you ever feel like your voice is not being heard; and no one's ever really listening to you? I will help you communicate your fears, wants, & needs in order to open doors to a healthier relationship within yourself & between your loved ones. So many of us have stumbled through life experiencing hurt, shame, rejection, & loss; now we carry emotional boulders that can block us or make us feel stuck. A compassionate, trauma-informed listener; I support you in your travels pointing out observations based on my own life and parenting experiences, and various training, and professional degrees, including Certified Trauma Professional level 2 and Gottman Couples Therapy level 3.
In walking life’s path we can encounter crossroads, or obstacles, which block our ability to see ahead. We might get flooded with anxiety, or bogged down by choice; pausing our journey. One positive way to resume progress is to gain insight into the challenge, and find a next step. Taking that step shifts perspective, enabling the discovery of yet more steps. Successful clients begin to view challenges as a way to build understanding, transforming difficulties into opportunities for growth.

I treat a variety of issues including depression, relationship problems, life transitions, men's issues, addictions, and co occurring disorders.
The beginning of personal change is knowing that a different experience is available. This is the seed of hope. The therapeutic experience is a collaboration between two individuals who both bring rich experience and knowledge into a therapeutic relationship. The situation that we find ourselves in is not our destiny. By choosing to participate in therapy, you are moving in the direction of creating the life you want to live.

I have successfully worked with adults and children, couples and families, with both common and complex needs. My approach focuses on experiential awareness and processing, while working through present day thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is holistic in that it views symptoms as attempts at coping. We work together establishing a calm place within you, through the enhancement of personal awareness, resources, and developing coping strategies; we then progress beyond coping skills, moving through the roots of old learning so that your change is lasting, and from the inside out.

Change is an elemental force, often imposing its will on us when we least expect it. It can also be one of the most elusive things in our lives when we try to enact it on our own. Understanding our relationship to change, and what prevents it, provides us the opportunity to harness its power in our own lives. Understanding how your experiences and systemic forces have impacted your life will also be key to our work together as we build a new path forward for you. You have all the energy to enact change inside of you, the next step is determining what prevents this.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
