Helping children, adults, families, and couples seek meaningful experiences and strengthen their own powerful inner compasses for the journey of life is my goal.
Throughout life’s journey experiencing struggles, sickness, and loss, we sometimes find ourselves in need of the kind of unbiased support and unconditional positive regard that a counselor can provide. We benefit from the sacred space that’s held just for us during therapy, and the healing that occurs in the relationship between ourselves and the counselor, and of course in the healthier relationship we develop with ourselves and others. When we experience the darkness of depression, overwhelming anxiety, trauma, loss, crisis of identity or faith, or even indecision, our personal guidance systems can become temporarily blocked.

Most of my clients were either not sure about therapy, or they had already had a bad experience with therapy in the past. I pride myself on giving a different kind of experience. I’m real, I show up fully, (I tend to swear a lot unless you tell me not to) I will never talk down to you or presume what is best for you. You’re in charge. My job is to listen, give feedback, and help you towards the goals that you set. Making that first call can be nerve-wracking, but that's generally the hardest part. (you can text me, if that's easier 970-903-3893) You can learn more about me at www.durangopsychotherapy.com

Everyone’s journey towards living a healthy, satisfying, and rewarding life looks different, and my approach to therapy is to support you in reaching your goals on your own terms. Because I don’t believe there is a “right” answer for healing from grief and trauma, feeling more positive or hopeful, less anxious, or improving relationships, I offer a variety of treatment approaches and together we adjust our approach to be the best fit for you.

Seeking treatment is a huge step. You're a strong and capable person for doing so. Whether you need extra support, affirming space or have a problem to solve, I am here to help. Psychotherapy provides safe space to reevaluate priorities, slow down and find ease. I approach therapy with humor, warmness and analogy in helping clients see different perspectives. My approach is solution oriented while being eclectic, exploratory and expansive. Therapy is focused on establishing a full picture of client history, relationships and current levels of functioning. Then collaboratively a treatment plan is established to meet client goals.

We all need someone to talk to when life hits us hard. We all dealt with the stresses of the Covid pandemic as best we could at the time. However, there are still many issues facing each one of us. If you are in need of someone to talk to about your mental health, please reach out to me. We can talk about, and work on, issues such as depression, grief, divorce, work stress, anger and many others. I’ve been in private practice since 2007 and have had an office in Cortez for 6 years. I earned my Masters degree from East Central University in Oklahoma in 2006.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
