My primary goal in therapy is to help you explore your challenges while developing coping strategies, motivation for change, and trust in our relationship.
Everyone comes to therapy with a unique story. Whatever may be bringing you in, I can assure you that no other person has told your story before. With a fresh, curious perspective, together we can explore life's problems to help you understand yourself more deeply. In shining a light on hidden beliefs, feelings, and patterns of behavior, you can feel free to decide whether the story you came in with is the one you want to continue living in. Problems that often lead my clients towards deeper therapeutic exploration include self doubt, relationship conflict, worries about sex and sexuality, addictions and compulsions, and trauma.

Through our collaborative therapeutic relationship, you will develop skills that you can continue to use for the rest of your life.
You are unique in the challenges you face and in your gifts. Whether you suffer from anxiety, depression, an unrelenting sense of despair, low self-esteem, are hyper-critical of yourself, feel disconnected from life or joyless, are frustrated with work or school, have problems in your relationships, or suffer with PTSD, your experience is particular to you. I will help you discover the underlying dynamics of your symptoms and patterns in ways that allow you to transform them. Rather than merely "fixing" a problem or “fixing” yourself, you will learn how to listen to and tend what troubles you.

Finding the right therapist is hard—harder than it ought to be. Especially when you’re already struggling. But it’s essential. The person of the therapist, their fit for you, and the therapeutic relationship are all more important to successful therapy than any degree, license, orientation, or even years of experience. Making the call and actually doing therapy is even harder—but worth it. Psychotherapy works. It can be one of the most significant and transformative experiences of your life. It's also a big investment of time, money and effort. I honor your courage and support your commitment to yourself to even consider it.

I utilize an integrative approach to psychotherapy which places emphasis on the therapeutic relationship.
The people I work with often come to me because they are looking to gain insight into emotional patterns, address difficult dynamics, and develop more balanced relationships with themselves or others. Together we paint a picture of their life stories, work to integrate the various aspects of themselves, and move towards the life they want to be living. We take the time to explore the context and history of the problem or symptom they are experiencing in order to better address it. I work with people of all ages and backgrounds and promote authentic expression and reflection in the therapy room.

As a bi-racial, cishet man of the global majority I've had to undertake redefining what traditional masculinity means for me and those with whom I am in relationship.
As relational beings, the experience of feeling connected to our authentic self and that of others is essential to wellness. Investigating the multi-layered stories that are told about us, that often inform how we view ourselves, is critical to finding alternative ways of stepping into the power of our truths. Exploring, and interrogating, the messages that are intimately tied to culture, ancestry, and community can offer wisdom necessary in addressing problems in living folks experience. Whether seeking individual, relational, or family therapy, I believe the healing journey is inherently a collective one.

I deeply value my relationship with my clients, and I prioritize building a warm and welcoming space for you to bring your full self.
Are you your own worst critic? Finding faults comes easy, but celebrating or loving yourself feels impossible. Do you often put the needs of others before your own, and find it difficult to say “no”? I am with you, and I would love to be a support for you. Let’s quiet that inner critic that can be so very loud, and make space for more more self-love, self-trust, and self-esteem. You deserve to feel confident, empowered, celebrated and loved. In our time together, we will practice self-reflection & self-compassion, develop effective coping strategies, and strengthen your relationship with yourself and others.

I've been helping individuals and couples for 30 years to improve relationships, deal with challenges, heal from trauma and abuse, eliminate self-destructive behaviors, overcome codependency and addiction, and to feel more secure.
I help clients see that change and growth are an inside job. When people feel unhappy they often look to other people, career, money and substances to make them feel better. This doesn't work long-term and only creates dependencies that harm them. For many, struggles are rooted in childhood experiences with less than ideal parenting and attachment patterns. Helping my clients to resolve and move past family of origin wounds, identify and eliminate destructive beliefs from their childhood and the behavior created from these beliefs, allows clients the ability to embrace their own lives and opens the door into joy & personal freedom.

In addition to individual therapy, I provide couples and family therapy, as well as pre-martial counseling.
I believe that emotional symptoms, such as anxiety and depression, are ways that our bodies and minds communicate with us. Through really listening and being present with you, I will help you explore these messages, gain a deeper understanding of yourself, and heal old wounds. This process is profound in creating change, allowing you to experience more peace within yourself, live with more passion and presence, and improve the quality of your relationships. I am a licensed psychologist with a doctorate in clinical psychology. I have experience working with individuals of all ages who are seeking to live more full and engaged lives.

I partner with parents to help connect with their children and learn to set boundaries.
Childhood is hard. Being a parent is hard. I work with individuals from infants (and their caregivers) to adults to help with these important and challenging life stages. Oftentimes we do not realize we have patterns of behavior that at one time protected us, yet now cause ourselves more harm. Through our work together, you will gain greater insight and understanding of these unhelpful cycles and your own life experiences, so you can create meaningful change in your life.

I specialize in working with individuals and couples to explore dating, relationship patterns, attachment, and trauma. I'm especially passionate in supporting the queer community. Together, we work to identify and examine recurring patterns with care and curiosity. In individual work, this can look like exploring your early experiences that informed your attachment style and connecting these patterns to the way you show up or abandon yourself today. In relationship therapy, we bring awareness to the dynamic between partners these individual experiences create to deepen connection, enhance vulnerability, and improve communication.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
