As a psychologist, I provide psychotherapy and psychological evaluation services. I typically utilize a CBT approach when providing psychotherapy. However, each parent and client comes to therapy with specific concerns which they would like addressed. To provide the most effective treatment, other modalities may be incorporated after taking into account concerns, diagnosis, and age. Whether it's CBT, mindfulness techniques, ACT, schema therapy, Gottman method, or narrative therapy, our sessions will be unique and goal driven.

Because of my work experience, I am very comfortable working with dual diagnosis (co-occurring addiction/substance use and mental health symptoms), relationship problems, and with people from many different spiritual/religious and cultural backgrounds.
My name is Mark Schlutsmeyer and I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist practicing full-time in Yuba City, California, and part-time throughout California via teletherapy. I work with adults on issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma, shame, self-harm, addiction/substance use, grief, spirituality issues, and relationship problems. I especially enjoy working with adults who have co-occurring mental health and addiction/substance use issues. I strongly recommend scheduling a free 15-minute consultation call with me for more information and to determine if my therapy approach might be a good fit for you.

I know that one of the most important benchmarks for success in therapeutic work is the relationship between a client and therapist, so if you think we might be a good fit for one another, I'm here when you're ready to take the next step.
Hi, my name is Dr. Martin. In my seven years as a licensed psychologist, I have learned that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to therapeutic intervention; each patient brings their own unique experiences and skills. That's why I approach sessions with an eclectic and practical style, allowing us to collaboratively formulate goals and develop techniques for success.

Therapeutic exploration promotes profound connection, altering and healing the internal relationship and its experience of/with itself.
Sometimes life is hard. Inevitably it may occasionally feel intolerable, tremendous, or overwhelming. At times, challenges may feel insurmountable, and appear to require courage that is assumed to exceed our current capacity. And, especially during significant change, may evoke questioning the fundamentals of identity, relationships, and/or the external world. Although challenges in life cannot be avoided or prematurely alleviated, they can be shared in the space and experienced with healing. Within this process, there is a depth of potential for the parts of the self that hold the strength and resilience yet to be discovered.

Assisting couples through precarious times is a specialty: addressing communication breakdowns, closeness, animosity, and dealing with affairs.
My aim is to assist clients in being happier, healthier, and stronger as they encounter the hurdles that the different phases of life can bring. Whether those hurdles are internal, interpersonal or professional, most clients walk out of sessions feeling understood, really seen, smarter about themselves and their situation, and with real tools to positively affect their lives. Often interpersonal relationships prove the most challenging over time, triggering defensive/protective reactions that usually make things worse. Working in these arenas can bring valuable awareness, and offer pathways to challenge and change perspectives.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
