Maybe today's struggle feels bigger than your ability to cope. Asking for help may make you feel a little sick, but more of the same just isn't an option. Your self-esteem has bottomed out; a harsh inner critic is running the show. Maybe you’re experiencing grief after a death or the loss of a relationship. You’re getting pushed around by anxiety or depression; you've reached mid-life and are asking, is this it? You’re dating and wondering why nothing seems to work out. Your relationships cause more stress than fulfillment and you want marriage counseling or pre-marital counseling. Whatever the reason, welcome.

Individual adult, adolescent, and couples clients, straight and gay, and all genders are welcome.
In everyone's life, some heartache will happen. Some days, the things we do to cope with stress no longer work as well as they once did; other days, it may feel like everything is falling apart. No matter what your struggle is, we will work together to understand the source of your problems and develop practical strategies to reach your goals. In your first session, we will begin to answer the question, "What would help look like right now?" and help you cultivate and develop tools you may not even know you had within your reach.

I am trained in relational and evidence based approaches which help individuals and couples get to the roots of their deepest pain, uncover blocks and heal.
Welcome home to yourself. You are a creative entrepreneur, person of color, neurodivergent and conqueror. You want to obtain inner and outer peace, connect with others in ways that work and stop creating the same negative cycles in relationships. You want to better manage your emotions, be confident in your decision-making and transform the deeper pain which has been troubling you (and possibly generations before you). Pain often indicates the need for our compassionate attention to certain aspects of our inner life which need tending to.

Humorist, Mark Twain once wrote, "I've had a lot of worries in my life, most of which never happened." Left unchecked, fear-based thinking shapes reality and impedes potential and growth. The unknown and mixed messages surrounding the pandemic has reinforced this mindset and may have left you with perpetual feelings of sadness, uncertainty and doubt. The first step of our journey together is establishing a relationship built upon trust, respect, and safety. Through shared conversation, mindfulness, and self-regulating techniques, we create a bond that honors your unique story and circumstance.

I have experience working in hospitals, clinics, and community-based mental health settings with children, adults, and families who struggle with mood disorders, personality disorders, trauma, grief, stress, relationship/boundary issues, parenting, and more.
Life is not easy but you are not meant to do it alone. Being vulnerable with another person can be uncomfortable, intimidating, and may even bring guilt and shame. I believe that you are worthy to be heard, restored, and to thrive. As your therapist, I seek to advocate for and provide a safe, caring, non-judgmental, & collaborative space for holistic care (physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually) that can promote deeper healing and growth. My goal is to help and empower you to uproot unhealthy patterns of behaviors and thoughts & to discover and experience what it means to be hopeful again and become a healthier, true self.

My primary interest is in raising each person's level of functioning, whether it is from deep trauma to a greater sense of security, or whether it is from an empty relationship to a life of vitality and gratification.
Often, when we are hurting, we don't know why. We think it might be work, or problems at home. It might be money, or worries about health. These vague, nameless feelings are sometimes softened just by feeling understood. Feeling better in the world, sometimes, is achieved by feeling deeper connections to others, feeling responded to rather than ignored, and just simply feeling that who you are is important to another human being. I believe that being seen, recognized, and having explanations that make sense, can improve your life, both on a deeper level, and on a day to day basis.

I practice psychodynamic therapy with adults facing depression, anxiety, addiction, trauma, relationship problems, and personality disorders.
"How we do anything is how we do everything." We move through life in a distinct way that was shaped before we can remember, reinforces itself everyday, and inevitably leads to the same problems despite our best efforts to change. Do anxiety and depression color your everyday experience? Has addiction taken hold of your life? Do you struggle to build satisfying relationships? Through courageous self-exploration, I can help you find compassion for yourself and come to understand why you encounter the same issues again and again. Building this understanding and taking responsibility for your life can empower you to heal and grow.

Certain conditions are necessary for an effective therapeutic relationship—trust, patience, courage, curiosity, creativity.
I think every person has the capacity to heal oneself, but often the systems, histories and circumstances we navigate pull us away from this grace. Therapy can provide an opportunity to replenish, and in some cases, discover these inner resources. As your therapist, I would help you identify threads, themes and patterns in your relationships and communication, and we will use these threads as a compass for your healing and growth.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
